Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "BMW" with Ian Goode

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone! I had a great time. I do think I'll take up Doug's offer and do another show, so maybe I'll take some suggestions as to what the next topic should be.

Sorry, Patrick, about the inability to watch the rentals outside of the states. I saw that Doug is working on that so hopefully that will change soon. I'm going add a lot of entries to my blog in the near future. Some will include videos.

Thanks again everyone!
Ian

I thought your show was really great.

I would like to see you do a series of retouching shows where you work on the same automobile image over the course of several shows so you would have more time and get to take it from start to finish. I want to see how you finesse an image after you have 'built it'. Maybe since you need so many paths, you could have most of them done in advance and just do one or two for us, but aside from that I would like to see an auto retouching from start to finish.

I would also like to see a show where you do an automobile, but are only given a computer generated model and a background image.

Doug...missed last Sat...I noticed I can rent the show now? Normally you have one rebroadcast prior to youtube renting. Are you going direct to youtube now after one showing?

I've been going to YouTube ASAP for the past few months. But it doesn't interfere with the rebroadcasts.

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "BMW" with Ian Goode

Thanks Ian and Doug - a very helpful webinar - pity I missed the first 36 mins because I had not updated my Java Script software and so went round and round in circles trying to get it to work, till I tried that!

As I missed the beginning part, can someone tell me what layer mode Ian used for the noise layer. Was it soft light and a 50% black fill?

So for all those attending a webinar, ensure all your Java softwate is updated BEFORE the webinar - took me 15 mins just to shut down all my apps and restart my Mac after installing the update! Hugely frustrating ;-p

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE "BMW" with Ian Goode

Hi Rudibond.

The noise layer is one of my favorite tricks for saving time when compositing. It helps unify all your brush strokes and cloning when you are pull from uneven areas of the image. Here are my steps for a noise layer:

- Create a new layer (this layer will always stay on the top of your layer palette)
- fill it with 50% grey
- set that layer to overlay
- make the layer a smart object (this is optional. I do it so I can adjust the noise if I feel it needs more or less)
- fill the layer with Uniform noise and make sure Monochromatic is checked.

There are lots of advantages to putting the noise on a layer for compositing. The most important being that you can mask the noise layer and/or reduce it's opacity. This gives you the ability to manipulate it in multiple ways if you need. Another trick with noise in a layer is you can create multiple noise layers and clip them to certain elements. This is helpful if you are combining two elements that might be shot with different cameras or if you are using stock.

Last tip, make sure you keep in mind when cloning, healing, etc, have your brushes set to current and below and not all layers. you don't want to clone the noise under the noise. that will be double noise.

Thanks for watching and I hope this helps with what you missed.
Ian
