RetouchPRO LIVE "Painterly HDR" with Chris Alvanas

I'm pleased to welcome another new presenter to RetouchPRO LIVE: Chris Alvanas.

Chris is a retoucher, photographer, fine artist, author, and educator. He has a wide spectrum of work to share with us, but for his first live show I've asked him to perform one of his uniquely stylized HDR images as we watch and ask questions.

In case you're not familiar with HDR (High Dynamic Range) images, they're made from multiple images, identical except for their exposure. This allows access to a range of tones far outside the capability of a single shot. Chris will share his technique for combining these images into one, but will go beyond that to show how he uses further techniques to realize his unique vision.

From Chris:
"I want to talk about how to see potential and composing the capture for HDR and what I do with that and how I workflow the process. As I move to Photomatix through Lightroom, non-standard processes may be needed to get my desired results. Finally I move to Photoshop to apply a painterly feel to bring in the depth and detail that these images deserve. Overall I feel that whatever your desired outcome happens to be, the more options you have when navigating the process, the better your images will be. We can discuss capture and metering, tone mapping and finally Photoshop."

I wish I'd known before I sent out the announcement for the live show about the excellent Photoshop tips Chris shared. His local adjustment workflow wowed the audience, with many claiming it would have been worth the price on its own. Plus all his Photoshop tips can be used for non-HDR images.

Thanks for the link Doug. I truly enjoyed the beautiful architecture with the light streaming in the window. Very beautiful and tastefully done. Viewing the movie just took you back to that time, wondering what their life was like during this time. Wonderful photography and HDR.

I really highly recommend Chris's wonderful Painterly HDR that you put on. He takes HDR to a whole new level where you can contol every facet of the photo by amazing photoshop tips and his workflow. Thanks for bringing it to us.
