RetouchPRO LIVE - Displacement Maps

RetouchPRO LIVE with Steve Caplin
Photoshop Displacement Maps

During my annual Independence Day ritual of taunting the British, Steve Caplin interupted me and said, "speaking of flags, that would make for an excellent show". It was an excellent idea, so I gave back his scone.

On Tuesday's RetouchPRO LIVE, photoillustrator Steve Caplin will walk us through the ins and outs of using Photoshop's Displace filter and Displacement Maps. He'll make a flat rectangular flag seem to billow in the wind, but also has some more useful examples to show. I'm sure he'll also be open to some audience requests, and of course he'll answer your questions.

After his presentation Steve will stick around to answer any general Photoshop questions you may have. You can optionally upload an image to ask for help with. The access code is "maps" (no quotes).

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE - Displacement Maps

Good morning.

Just a quick note to say thanks for an enjoyable show last night with Steve Caplin.

I would like to show you my first attempt using the technique "Displacement Maps"

Regards

Re: RetouchPRO LIVE - Displacement Maps

Just watched the Steve Caplin video (I rarely get to watch them live). I followed a tutorial on displacement maps some time back, but always forget how to do things if I don't repeat them several times, so it was good to have them so well explained.

Here's a reflection using a displacement map similar to Steve's but working on different color channels. The emboss filter is applied at different angles on the red and green channels and a 50% grey gradient applied to differing portions at the top the red and green channels to fade them out a little.

The landscape was created with a photoshop 3d depth map.
