It would be great if the skin tone is not too orange. But overall i think is a very good technique to practise.

The tutorial is great though and I would suspect that the end colour would be a personal preference and also changeable. I prefer the image ended at step 4, but that is my prefered look.

Hey! I've been using this exact method for several months. It's been good to me... but I've never quite gotten step 7 (about filling the layer with 50% grey) I'm not sure what that means or how to do it... could you be more specific for a newbie!!! Thanks. Awesome tutorial!

Create a new layer, change mode to softlight, and then check the fill with 50% gray box.
