I learned a cool method from one of my scrapbooking sites that might just do the trick. It's making custom brushes from your photos. Here is an example. The tutorial came from Cassie Jones and is called Custom Photo Brushes. It sure has opened my world to creating brushes.

*I did this in minutes, so the edges on the brushes are rather rough. I would have spent more time extracting the original image first.
