Question Convert RGB to a Grayscale??

I used Technique post by Antonio in watercolor tutorial

When convert RGB to Grayscale My photoshop tell me if i want to flatten image. If i do the layers transform in one and stay black and white, if not is the same i have two layers but in black and white.
Note, if i was to flatten image when i convert inverse Grayscale to RGB,i have
a black and white photo.

What can i do?

Armando -- That's right. Convert to greyscale and flatten so that you get one black and white layer. Then clean up if necessary (only really necessary in areas you're planning to leave white in your finished image). Then convert back to RGB. Your image is in RGB mode but at this point is still black and white - but you're about to paint using the Art History brush and the History brush, which by default base themselves on the default snapshot of what the image was like when you started. Just try it - you'll be surprised!

The only case in which this won't work is if you save and close the image in the middle of the process and then reopen it. Then you'll lose the snapshot and it will all go horribly wrong.

Watercolor Tutorial

I realize this was posted a long time ago. The print feature is excellent, however, when I tried to print, nothing in a box showed up as a picture or screen capture so I could not print it. It just showed up as a blank box. I tried a couple of different tutorials & it was the same thing.

Is it something with my settings or with the site? Everything shows up well for viewing on the site. I would love to print some of these.

Thank you for your help.

Bonnie

Hi Bonnie:

Sorry you're having problems. Take a look at this thread...
http://www.retouchpro.com/pages/red-x.html

Could be a browser or security setting of some sort.

Another possibility:
* Go to the main forum page (click here )
* Scroll to the bottom
* Logout from RetouchPRO
* Login again

Could be that since you just registered, that the registration didn't kick in properly.

I have exactly the same problem. It doesn't matter whether or not Zone Alarm is running, all of the pictures are the dreaded "red x", before I installed Zone Alarm, afterwards, and with Zone Alarm configured for Retouch Pro. It also doesn't matter which printer I use. I've been a registered member for a long time, so that's not it, either. The images show up on the screen, but not in the printout. Does anyone have any ideas?

Images show up on screen, but not when you print...that's an interesting problem.

What operating system are you running and version?

What pop-up blockers, fire walls etc. are you running other than zone alarm?

Any other symptoms like only half the page printing?

Does this only happen when you use the print option on the tutorial page vs. using the file>print option?

Prints fine for me. Missing images are caused by outside linking, so it sounds like you're trying to print from a locally stored version of the page (that won't work).

I'm running Windows XP, IE 6. I use Zone Alarm and Earthlink's pop-up blocker, but the same thing happens when both are turned off. Also, print from the page, or use the print option on the page, doesn't matter. I empty my Internet cache on a regular basis also. This is the only site where the pictures disappear!

Here's a screen capture of print preview after using the print option on the tutorial page.

Thanks for the help,
Patricia

Here are a few suggestions:

1. Verify Sufficient Free Space on Your Primary Hard Disk
To check how much free disk space you have on your hard disk drive, follow these steps:

Quote:
Double-click My Computer on the desktop.
Right-click your primary hard disk (for example, drive C).
Click Properties.
The amount of free disk space should be 20 megabytes (MB) or more.
There is no minimum amount of free disk space required to run Office programs. However, most computers do require a certain amount of free space (usually around 20 MB) to open, close, and save files and to print documents.

If your hard disk has less than 20 MB of free disk space available, you may consider removing unused data files or temporary files or programs. After you have freed 20 MB or more on your primary hard disk, restart Windows and re-open the file.
2. Java:this may be a long shot, but some forums discussed this as a fix

Quote:
If you are experiencing red x's in Internet Explorer Windows it's a good chance that you don’t have the latest Java Software installed on your machine. Go to java.com to download it.

Java Virtual Machine

Patricia:

re: How come you're still having problems?
Who knows? It's no doubt something small, but sometimes this tech stuff goes way over my head.

Here's a not-so-elegant, but functional workaround.

Download the 5 attachments from this post and save on your hard disk. I downsized each of the high-res tutorial images to 7" wide and ~ 200 ppi, so they should fit onto an 8.5"-wide page and print reasonably well.

In the next post is the text of the tutorial. Open it, copy/paste into your word processing program, then insert each of the five images into it as indicated. You'll be in control of your own destiny.

Sorry 'bout all the hassle. It shouldn't be this difficult.

~Danny~

In IE6 under Tools - Internet Options Advanced tab, there is an option Print background colours and images. You may need to make sure this is checked.

Sigh. Thanks for the suggestion Christine, but, no, that isn't the answer either. Also, after re-checking yesterday, I can definitely print from other web sites and get the pictures without any problems. It's only the tutorials - all the tuts - from here! I agree that it's probably something to do with the way the pictures are linked, but I haven't a clue as to how to fix it. I guess I'll just use Danny's method to save the tuts. Thanks to everyone who's tried to help.

Sorry I have not responded sooner but I have been away. I just turned on the background print feature & that does not help. I am using XP Pro, IE 6 with Norton Internet Security 2004. I have lots of disk space & have not had a problem with printing in any other site. The pictures show up on the screen but do not print.

Thank you to Danny for the work-around but that becomes time consuming for many tutorials.

I have printed tutorials from this site before from other threads but not from this exact place.

Any other suggestions as these tutorials & this print feature are excellent?

Thank you for any help.

Bonnie

Alternative idea:

If you have Acrobat try printing to a PDF file.

If you do not have Acrobat there is a product called PDF995 which sets itself up as a printer and generates excellent PDF files.

There is a demo version available at www.pdf995.com/download.html.

Cost to buy a licence is only $9.95.

Do the pictures show if you use print preview? What printer are you using?

Christine, thank you for your reply. I am using an Epson 1280 printer. The images do not show up in the print preview but they show up when viewing the tutorials. There was an option in the printer to print all linked objects which I checked but it did not do any good.

I have never had a problem with any other site or even with printing in this forum from other threads. If I even had a clue what to check for, I could try to change some settings.

Any other suggestions?

Thank you,

Bonnie

Bonnie,

Have you tried the PDF idea?

Other questions:

Do you have the latest versions of Internet Explorer and your Printer Driver?

Do you have the XP service packs installed?

I will try loading an Epson 1280 driver and see if I have any problems but I suspect it is IE6.

What security level do you have set on your firewall - is Internet Explorer set on automatic in the Firewall programs screen?

When you say they don't show in print preview is that the epson printer preview or the print preview on the file menu in internet explorer? they are different.

Christine

Hi Christine,

Thank you for taking the time to help. I will try to answer all your questions. I did not download the PDF demo as I did not want to add another demo. Can I do it any other way in IE?

I am current with all OS updates & printer drivers. I do have Word & it opens with edit. The pictures do not show up.

My firewall is medium to high but even when it is disabled the pictures do not show up. I am using Norton Internet Security. Where is the Firewall Program screen in IE? I did not find anything about it in Help.

The pictures appear when viewing but do not show up in Print Preview in both IE & the printer.

I do not mean to take your time to try to figure this out. Do yours print OK? Mine are OK from other threads, just not this one.

Thank you,

Bonnie

It's no bother - I'd like to know the answer now.

Yes they print OK for me and I am using similar setup to you - XP - Norton Firewall and an Epson printer (mines a 950)

I didn't make it clear - the program control is in the firewall configuration screen.

The PDF995 demo is fully working you just get a nag screen.

I assume you don't have the XP built in firewall turned on as well? Mine is definitely off.

If you want - you can send me an email message (click on my name (Xaran)) and we can continue this outside the forum via e-mail.

Christine
