Does the internet have any "Digital dirt" on YOU?

"As we're often being reminded, the Internet has irrevocably changed the way that we look for and apply for jobs. But the web works both ways. So you may want to think twice about what you say in your blog or avoid posting photos from your last toga party online just in case a potential employer takes a look and changes their mind about you.

And this is no idle warning. According to a new survey by CareerBuilder.com, a quarter of hiring managers in the U.S. have used Google or other internet search engines to find out more about potential employees...."

You can use Google blog search to search for your screenname(s) that might turn up in blogs, etc.

It helps to have a common-as-dirt name. I get probably an email a week asking "are you the Doug Nelson that...". Only once was it someone actually looking for me.

But I get a lot of compliments on my photography (especially considering I'm not a photographer).

I'm still not used to people walking along "everywhere" talking on their cellphones - especially the ones with a hidden earpiece so they look like they're talking to themselves...

Just did a Google search -- Doug Nelson, you work in a number of locations and do some fine photographic work! Surprised you have time for your other job and your RetouchPro website...

I was one of the people that asked Doug a photo question after viewing what I thought was his photography site.

I carry a cellphone for my convenience only. If I'm not calling out it's switched off. I don't want to be "available" when I'm out and about, I'm on call enough when I'm at home.
