Hi...I'm new here...

Hi guys...just joined and I'm so excited to have found this place...I have always enjoyed fiddling around with pics but have never taken any classes and now that I'm a stay at home mom I think I can finally do that...but if it turns out I'm good enough at it I'd like to do some freelance work. I would love some suggestions on how to get started...recommended tools and classes...I'm mostly interested in photo retouching I believe but also photographic art and digital photography...I know very little about anything...haha...but I'm really passionate about pursuing this and just want to know what kind of education background is necessary or recommended and some schools with the best reputation for this. Thanks for any guidance you may want to share..

Hi erinavery, welcome to RetouchPro. I am sure you will find this a cool place to hang around. Look around and enjoy. To give you some guidance of where to start it would be helpful to know what kind of retouching software you have available...

Re: Hi...I'm new here...

Yeah...I guess it would sorry...I decided to write in a hurry before I left....I have Photoshop 7 and my camera is a Panasonic DMC-FZ30. I tend to go back and forth between Photoshop and Picnik when working on my own pics because I just don't know enough about Photoshop. I would love nothing more then to be able to do freelance retouching work or photography while I stay home with my kids.

I have no education background in this and I'm wondering if I just start by taking a digital photography class and a photoshop class or is it imperative to get a graphic arts degree if I want to have a chance at actually getting work??

Re: Hi...I'm new here...

Erinavery, sorry I can't give you any advice for professional guidance as I am a pure hobbyist enjoying photomanip and trying to produce some artwork. I started with ps over a year ago and have learned a lot just reading/viewing some tuts and by trial and error. I would suggest that you just try some tuts before starting taking any classes, because ps is so powerful, that you should perhaps know some basics..a good starting point would be Lynda, you can subscribe for $ 20/p.m. and attend each and every tut they have...http://www.lynda.com/
Hope this helps some :-)

Thanks so much Amica...I'll look into that. Do you know if there's a certain section of the forum for people who are just starting the learning process?

Re: Hi...I'm new here...

So...do you use this? If so...do you feel you learn as much as you would through a traditional school?

I'm really excited about it. I just need to find out if i need to have a degree in graphic arts or something in order to do this professionally or is knowledge and ability enough??
