Kids and Photoshop

How old do children need to be before they can start taking pictures and doing deliberate work (ie: not just random button pushing) with their images in Photoshop. 10? 13? 47?

Do any grade schools teach Photoshop?

Re: Kids and Photoshop

I am only 12 years old and I think i can do pretty good with photoshop. i know what contrast is, i know how liqufy, i use a wacom tablet, and I have been doing this for 2 or 3 years.i really dont think that it really has to do with age. I think that if you have a child that is interested they might do very well.

Re: Kids and Photoshop

i agree with doug. good post, allison and welcome to RP

not sure this is the right question, doug. we've probably all heard of 6 or 7 year olds that can play concert quality piano and like stories. so, i'm curious, what prompted this question?

Re: Kids and Photoshop

My daughter started messing around with Photoshop when she was about 8. She started with just pating photos together in a collage or creating iron-on text and pics for t-shirts. She likes following tutorials, and at this point (age 13) she's pretty fair at using the program.

She's not teaching me...yet.

Yeah, I agree, age doesn't matter. I know adults that want to learn some PS and they just cannot understand masking no matter how I describe it. (How do you keep from painting on certain wall areas) - masking tape Very frustrating.

Re: Kids and Photoshop

Doug, I been taking pictures for over 50 years and still do random button pushing! (or at least thats what my wife thinks!)
Just remember to keep whatever you get them, within their capabilities.

I taught Photography and Lab to Cub Scouts (8 to 10 years old) Some took to the camera and darkroom like ducks to water others could have cared less.. those that were self motivated and wanted to learn were outstanding and continued working in Photography..

The Questions are: Do they really want to learn? Is it something they want to put the time in to do? Do they have a built in Photographers Eye? How good are you at the powers of persuasion and molding their hearts and minds?

So my answer is.. Tis up to the individual..

No Photo classes in grade school around my area.

Ho, Ho, Ho! Happy Shopping!
