Hi everyone, I've been enjoying this very informative page so far. Some facts about me. I have a background and degree in film Visual Effects (CGI stuff) I did a lot of film retouching know as rotoscope/digital paint but couldn't make a good living doing it (very short term contracts and unreliable work load). Luckily when my contract expired I got call from my old job and went back. I make around 55k a year (full benefits), as a retoucher in a well know Media Company. Ideally I would like to work for a publications company like Conde Nast or an Ad agency. I'm not sure how to get in or if I even qualify. The type of retouching we do is definitely not as high end as you folks. Most our stuff is RGB web based stuff; we don't spend more than an hour on each products. A couple of question I have are. Would you consider my gig a good deal in California? Should I move to New York for this type of job? Do full time jobs with benefits exist in this industry or is it just all contract gigs? What are the differences in a working for and Ad agency and anything else? What Characteristics make a brilliant retoucher? How would my skills as an ex CGI artist and a retoucher be viewed by a future employer? Thank you much!!
