Stupid confessions

In an effort to provide a morale boost to those closer to the beginning of the learning curve, I thought it might be fun to post our painful admissions of retouching-related problems that turned out to be our own fault. I'm a past master at shooting at my own feet, but I'll just post one to get us going:

I use the mouse on my Wacom tablet, but after I moved my office I couldn't get the mouse to stay still. It jumped and twitched all over the place, no matter if I was in photoshop or just browsing the web. I tried everything I could think of to track down the problem, to no avail. So I finally called Wacom. Wacom support is always very friendly and knowledgeable, and this was no exception. Her first question was "do you have a CRT monitor?". I said yes, in fact I have two. "Is your tablet very close to one of the monitors?" I had to admit that I was working on a new desk, and this one forced me to have my tablet partially tucked under one of the monitors, except when I had it out to use the pen. She explained how CRT monitors use a huge magnet which was interfering with the tablet. DOH! That explained why it was only when I used my mouse. I skootched the monitor back a bit and the tablet forward a bit, no more epileptic mouse.

So how about you? Surely you've had something that didn't work and it turned out to be the nut behind the wheel. Dig deep, get confessional, and hopefully we'll end up with a long, funny thread that we can point new members to so they don't feel quite so stoopid.

Yeah; I panaked once (well quite recently actually; lol) when I couldn't figure out why I couldn't run any PS filters on a PNG file that someone posted for play until I realized that it used indexed colors. lol

Re: Stupid confessions

Mine is usually trying to do something while there is a selection active out of sight. I am finally getting to the point where that is the first thing I check.

Re: Stupid confessions

Back when this site was new someone emailed me a JPG for a Challenge. It looked perfect, so I posted it, but no one could see it, not even me. I could view it in Photoshop, but not in any web browser. I spent hours trying different apps, resaving the file, nothing would make it show in a web browser. Then I finally noticed it was a CMYK file. (I didn't even know JPG supported CMYK until then)

Re: Stupid confessions

It took me ages to figure out that you had to accept a crop or filter. And then it took me another embarrassingly long time to find the command to accept those changes. I am a slow learner.

Re: Stupid confessions

Losing my brush and getting a cursor after hitting the Caps Lock key by mistake. Took me a long time to figure that one out. Way to long. To many times.

Re: Stupid confessions

I was working through a tutorial from Advanced Photoshop Magazine and the step was to make a new alpha channel. I couldn't figure out why everything turned red. I had to revert to my last save eventually.
