Sometimes Life is Good

this is my first login with my new computer. it's rather amazing, this rig (compared to my last). it's an intel quad core I7, 64 bit vista and 64 bit motherboard, nearly a gig in video ram (nvidia 260 card), 6 gigs of ram and very nice wide screen monitor. it's freaking fast! i tested this using filter forge and some heavy filters, ones that take a long time to render. i got nearly 10 times the speed on the new rig compared to the old! now, that's just sweet

but, it isnt just the new rig. i installed a router and have both computers running on my DSL 6.0. networking is next

but, that's not all either. i had a mild stroke last march (2008) and it left my legs partially dead. i had smoked for 40 years and had to quit...RIGHT NOW! since quitting, my health has been returning. i've got much of the feeling back in my legs due to assists and therapy and a strong vitamin regimen. so, that's getting better.

but, yep, you guessed it, that's not all. i've always been involved in music, piano, guitar, but mostly voice. my throat had gotten so bad i had nearly quit singing. it just hurt too much to do it for even a complete song. it's coming back! my voice is much stronger now. i can sing without much pain or noticable discomfort! so, i went out and bought a new 12 string guitar! now, that's sweet!

but... hehe, yeah, there's more. having two computers running, i can run all my paint and filter stuff on one and play music and videos on the other, render in one while doing something else in the other and so on. it really makes things easier and faster. i've got filter forge and paint shop pro 12 ... (oh yeah, i bought paint shop pro 12, too, and put it on the new machine.) and the browser open on the new rig while playing my youtube playlist on the other. just plain sweet

next on the list is a new camera

and, i've signed a contract for some graphics work which i'll be doing! may not pay much, but hey, it's work

oh, and i'm getting windows 7 for free when it comes out later this year

so, yes, sometimes life can be good

Fantastic goings on, wish you all the best. Finally giving up the smokes can be rough, but well worth it.

Great to hear some postive things happening during these generally tough times. Couldn't happen to a nicer person too. Enjoy :-)

Kraellin, sorry for the extra stress the additional computer system will bring you! Just like when people play 2 slots at the casino at the same time.

Re: Sometimes Life is Good

miningart, yes, giving up cigs was distinctly difficult and i still get the cravings... after eating, with coffee, with sugar, after sex, when i'm awake, when i'm alive... hehe, ok, it's not quite that bad. i had some help, too. there is a particular concoction of vitamins that helped me cut the cravings in half or more. it didnt completely eliminate them, but it was then bearable. i still take them on a slightly reduced rate.

thanks, doreen

thanks, andy

thanks, syd

aartist, well, it's a vista system, so i accept your sympathy the nice thing is, it looks like microsoft is finally getting it right with the new windows7. i've seen it and tested it a tiny bit. it's very stable and a lot less bloated than vista. vista can take almost 2 gigs of memory to run, while win7 takes less than 1. so, they've trimmed the fat bigtime and smoothed out a ton of bumps in win7. it's the first operating system from microsoft that i'm actually looking forward to using... and i get it free for having bought vista when i did. so, the release date has now been officially stated and i'm patiently waiting for october 22nd

i do like some of the features of vista and it seems fairly decent, but i have had one blue screen of death so far, so that's not too impressive. it's run all my old software i've tried on it so far, so that's been good. but, i can feel the bloatware. it's sluggish at times. and, the error catching when running other programs seems pretty good. i've noticed a program or two sort of locking up or seemingly starting to and vista has caught it and unlocked it, so that's good, also. and, i havent had to run anything in 'compatibility mode' yet and that's good. now, i dont know if it's because of the service packs that vista doesnt seem as bad as some were reporting before, or if it's just chronic complainers trying to gain a little attention, but so far, vista hasnt been any worse than win xp... so far.

thanks, palms you are a dear and as for the avatar, yes, i figured it was time to quit hiding behind the archer that old archer avatar, btw, was one of the first decent graphic manipulations i ever did, which is why i chose it. it was a graphic from a computer game box that someone had converted to a smaller image and i took it further by making it a 50 x 50 and then making it more viewable/clean.

so any ways, thank you all and may you all be well

Re: Sometimes Life is Good

hi jack,

well, like almost any microsoft program, especially the o/ses, you wait till the service packs start coming out or the patches and then buy... maybe.

i'm not getting a dslr. i've been the whole slr route years ago in film days and i really dont want to be lugging around several lenses, a bag, many filters, extensions, etc. and, i dont really want the expense, either. so, i'm looking at the near-slrs. they are not true slr's and dont have all the lens changing ability and so on, but do have a small size that i can wear on my belt, 12 megapixel or better, 24x optical (28mm to 600mm+) and a host of other features that are all i need these days. so, i've been looking at the panasonic fz 18, 28, and now the 38, the new nikon coolpix p90 (24x optical, 12 megapixel) and the kodak z980 (24x optical, 12 megpix).

however, i've almost eliminated the nikon because it doesnt shoot and save in RAW, though i do like some of the other features, but that one is just a deal breaker at this point. the panasonic is very tempting. it actually is the closest to a true near-slr than any of the others. it has lens threads for adding filters and some other things i like, but, only has the 18x optical and i do a lot of outdoor shooting where a strong zoom is a must. so, i've almost decided it's going to be the kodak. it has the strong zoom and the 12 megpix along with manual focus, shoots in raw, has good support (i know, because i already own one kodak), shoots in brackets well, and is small enough to wear on my belt. i do wish it had the lens threads, though and the time lapse shooting of the nikon. add those two features into the kodak and it would be a no-brainer.

i saw in another thread that you've been getting into photography more heavily lately and that you bought a new nikon body. very cool. what are you shooting mostly?
