| Re: What is USM abbreviation Also look http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unsharp_masking "Unsharp masking (USM) is an image manipulation technique, often available in digital image processing software. It was first used in Germany in the 1930s as a way of increasing the acutance, or apparent sharpness, of photographic images.[citation needed] The "unsharp" of the name derives from the fact that the technique uses a blurred, or "unsharp," positive to create a "mask" of the original image.[1] The unsharped mask is then combined with the negative, creating the illusion that the resulting image is sharper than the original. From a signal-processing standpoint, an unsharp mask is generally a linear or nonlinear filter that amplifies high-frequency components." |
