Volcano in Iceland

Strange how mother nature rules our lives! whatever advances we make in technology

All Uk airports are closed (as well as other European countries) and as i live by a airport the quietness is so weird( believe me you get used to them and dont notice them till there arent any around )

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20100416/...c-dba1618.html

reports are that we wont see the dust ( unless it rains ) but will have some spectacular sunrises or sunsets.

And typically last night was cloudy, and this morning well is sunrise before 8 a.m. ? but hopefully tonight will be ok

So if any one gets any shots please post them

here are some stunning ones from the volcano in Iceland

mind you rumour has it that it could effect our climate for a while, and you know how we Brits like to complain about the weather

Re: Volcano in Iceland

We're 20 minutes from the Amsterdam airport and it's eerily quiet here as well. Thanks for the link to the gallery. I was glued to my computer this morning searching for pictures of the eruption.

Here is a website that was featured on BBC News 24, It's down at the moment as I think every man and his dog must be trying to access it. It provides real time data on aircraft their flight path and other stats, pretty interesting in a way.

AND just think the environmentalists that say humans are putting to much Freon in the atmosphere from leaking refrigeration units
But These volcanoes put more Freon in the atmosphere than all the humans ever have or ever will. ..

I remember in the early 80's when Mt St Helen erupted it curtailed flights in the US - I was in the Air Force and had to do special Inspections to the acft engines that ingested the ash ..

Re: Volcano in Iceland

I remember when Mt. Pinatubo erupted a few years back and it spitted out more chlorine gas then Man has ever released 3 times over as Lloyd has already inferred. I also remembered that the next year, the temperatures were much cooler then the previous, so we might be in for a mild Summer and cold Winter this year. Doesn't feel like it now (quite warm here in Alabama this Spring), but we shall see if I'm right or not.

Re: Volcano in Iceland

A news story states the following:

"More floods from melting waters are expected as long as the volcano keeps erupting -- and in 1821, the same volcano managed to erupt for more than a year."

Can you imagine a year with no air traffic in Europe-?

Re: Volcano in Iceland

That should even accelerate global cooling. lol

Sorry for the environmental jab. My heart's out for those effected in Europe. I can't even image a year or more of a continuous eruption like this though. Economically, we don't need any more help like this. Europe, I'm sure is hurting too and if you take away tourist money, that really would be bad. I also heard that consumables are also being effected because trade has diminish due of this volcano. Lets just hope this volcano plugs itself up soon.

Re: Volcano in Iceland

Still no flights next update is at 7am sunday

not only is it quiet but as today has been a clear day have missed seeing the vapour trails ! ! ! ! ! ! !

although a small light aircraft has been up for a few sorties wonder what the ATC told them ? maybe "the sky is your limit "?

The cost for British and Irish airlines is estimated at 28 million pounds per day ! ! ! !

couple that with the environmental issues this is a big issue for sure

Ship traffic (though much slower) should still be fine for transporting goods and patient people, but beware the pirates, aaargh!

Re: Volcano in Iceland

Palms, speaking of vapor trails, I wonder if the questionable-looking chemtrails will cease as well? I see and photograph those all the time in LA, and if they're not created purposely, then we have a serious air traffic control problem...

Re: Volcano in Iceland

pnp, we do have a serious air traffic control problem in LA, but not as bad as you might think from your photos. Those are vapor trails; they stay in the air for quite a while, depending on temperature (c-c-cold at those altitudes), relative humidity, and wind. After a while they get dispersed - can make some interesting patterns if the plane that's leaving them is changing altitude, since wind can vary in direction and velocity with altitude. Your photos show contrails of different ages. They weren't all made at the same time, so just give an indication of how many planes went over in the last x hours.

Re: Volcano in Iceland

Hi Lurch, it's one of those things can can be (and is) endlessly debated, and I don't want to get into it all here (there are conspiracy forums for that purpose, LOL), but aside from the explanation you give which I have heard elsewhere, something must account for the weird flight patterns we see in every Western country.

X's and crosshatches, trails starting and stopping along the path, extremely high altitude flights heading west from somewhere east of LA (where are they going, China? But wait, they turned around and are heading back the same way E/W along the mountains), trails that spread until the entire sky is hazy, etc. I have even seen some planes making these trails and others not, at the same time on the same day. And the weather here doesn't really vary much, but the presence and type of the patterns do from one day to the next.

Anyway! It would be interesting to hear from others in our worldwide membership.

Re: Volcano in Iceland

As a quick followup, here's a photo sequence that I think illustrates something not normal, and usually considered unacceptable proximity in aviation, no? I believe the planes were at about the same altitude over Fullerton CA.

The "X" often is part of these patterns. I shot my first one in the mid-90s in Texas without knowing much about it; I thought it looked cool, and have seen many since.

Though not over Mexico, strangely. Only upon returning to the US on a cruise ship several years ago did I see the patterns resume.

Those of you in Europe, please tell us if any of this is going on during the general aviation shutdown.

And no, I'm not a loony, I just see stuff and wonder what's going on ;-).

Re: Volcano in Iceland

The Dutch skies are as blue as a robin's egg and quiet as a crypt. It's very strange. The sunrises/sets haven't been particularly colorful.

I haven't noticed suspicious or unusual vapor trails here...any 'X'es I've seen are obviously at different times, altitudes. I've never noticed them lingering, distorting or 'skipping'. But I'll keep my eyes peeled, camera in hand. :-) That is when and if flights resume.

Re: Volcano in Iceland

In your photo you've got an X, a grid, a broken trail and two planes heading toward each other-!

Oh, and there's a face in the volcanic ash cloud! (Isn't this fun?)

? Now you're being silly. Space is 3-dimensional and you're forgetting time.

You do realize that we are wired as babies to see faces in everything, right?

Re: Volcano in Iceland

Oh wow lots to think about there

Usually we just sit there and look at the sky watching the planes fly over leaving pretty patterns ! ! ! ! ! !

oh well as there are still no flights i will have to sit and debate the conspiracy theory !

nice photo's all lets keep the thread going with some non heated debate !

Re: Volcano in Iceland

Has anyone else ever been to the Almere flower auction by Schiphol? Normally flowers from all over the world are flown and driven there, auctioned in the morning and then flown or driven out the same day to all corners of the world. I'm wondering if there is going to be a glut of local blooms for sale here next week then?

And it's the start of Dutch strawberry season- so maybe more for me.

It boggles the mind. This could have much more far ranging implications than anyone realizes

Re: the face. At least someone else originated that; I just posted the link... ;-)

And Nancy, given enough time, those two planes in your pic will enter each others' space! Or at the least make another X.

I found this

Interesting pictures. Im amazed about the electric charge that ash has. Is it really possible that the ash cloud generates so much electricity that it makes those lightning bolts =o

Re: Volcano in Iceland

Wow some super photo;s turning up, i too am amazed by the lightening

here main job of the day has been everyone cleaning the cars to get rid of the dust on them, which we are all assuming is ash from the volcano
amazing that dust here in the middle of the UK has travelled all the way from Iceland

still airport closure, next question is how long before all the food prices start to increase ? petrol is already at the highest it has ever been @ £1.21p per litre

In UK? =D I thought the main dust cloud is heading to russia over Sweden, Norway and Finland. And at the moment I hope it goes away before friday.. I should be going to Spain. More accurately Majorca. =D If it doesnt.. my flight is going to be delayed.

1.21GBP.. Here it is something like 1.45 EUR which is something like 1.28GBP Been a while. and it always rises at summer because of travellers =D

the main dust cloud could well be over those countries but we still got some ( hence why the airports are shut )

fingers crossed for your flight and all others,
