Mega-Bug.

This one's just for nostalgic fun. My very first computer was a TRS-80 Color Computer (and later got the COCO 3) or short name COCO. One of my favorite games was Mega-Bug. Found a cool site that will allow you to play it online (so long as you have Java installed). Click link below for instructions on how to use the site (Scott's site has the link too). Also added some screenshots for fun. Happy I am now. Brought back memories that are way over 25 years old. lol

Will warn you that the sound sucks (cool to hear the Weee Gothaaa sound effect though despite the sorry quality).

Re: Mega-Bug.

I get nostalgic once in a blue moon and play games on Commodore 64 Emulators.

In some senses, those were the days; games weren't as pretty as they are today, but they sure were time consuming!

Re: Mega-Bug.

Thanks for the words folks. Found a way to get the sound to be a lot better. Just go to the setup controls and click the high quality audio option; duhhh. lol

Now back to playing Megabug.

Re: Mega-Bug.

lol; Mega-Bug is very similar to this one Craig. You eat dots and have to avoid the bugs (the game plays la cucaratcha by the way, so it must be roaches; lol). I remember spending much time typing code from magazines into my COCO and having a blast with what I felt was not that bad of graphics at that time. lol

Just as a side note, I can't seem to beat the game. I remember it took me literally months the first time to win. I only one a total of maybe 3 times at that time. I already played for nearly a week now and only got to a little over 2000 points and still had dots left. lol

Still, as simple as this game is, it's very addicting and I'm going to beat the maze one day. Also, as a side note, I'm now just using the JAVA consol and not my browser; lot better now.

Re: Mega-Bug.

Photoshop for COCO (program was called COCOMAX). lol

We've definitely come a long long way. Sorry for milking this thread, but it's fun that we can now actually emulate these oldy but goodie machines. I've never seen this program before by the way since we were dirt poor even when I was in Highschool and Dad didn't buy me the Disk Drive (only had the cassette drive; lol) and this program came on disk.

Talking Re: Mega-Bug.

I love Mega Bug so much I rewrote it for Windows! I call it Super MegaBug. You can download it from gamejolt.com. The maze is bigger, there are more bugs, the ability to wormhole (hyperspace) with upgraded sounds, music and of course the familiar "We Gotcha!". Works on all versions of Windows from XP up, 32 and 64bit. I wrote it in QB64 and with the source code you can compile if for Linux if you like. It's free.

Re: Mega-Bug.

Cool; I'm a big fan of open source. Just downloaded it but haven't played with it yet. Don't wan't to register at gamejolt, but will post here my thoughts. I too am a big MegaBug fan, but I've been playing it for nearly 2 months (on and off) and still haven't won (only one 3 times in a 2 year period as I recall when I had my CoCo; lol).

Re: Mega-Bug.

Can I say excellent. Just played a round (intentionally lost to here the weee gottch sound; lol). Wow. Music/sound effects fantastic. The maze is much more complicated then the orignal too. Think you got a winner here. Going to share your link to the other board that I shared Megabug on. Just as a side note, this is Open Source, but you are not on Sourceforge's page for whatever reason, but I know other Open Source GPL projects are also not listed at Sourceforge. I know some linux guys who would really like this one too so hopefully someone will compile in for that platform as well. Again thanks for sharing.

Re: Mega-Bug.

Thanks for the great response to the game! I'm really surprised at all the sites around the world that have grabbed a copy to offer for download. Seems that there are many of us nostalgic Mega-Bug players out there.

Re: Mega-Bug.

My brother was also an avid player in that time. He's now back from Iraq and I do plan on showing him your cool result when he gets back in town (on a much needed vacation with kids and wife right now). Again, thanks for sharing your gem with me and all. Not sure how many actually played with your version, but I still play it on occasion (admit that I play with photo art a heck of a lot more; lol).

Re: Mega-Bug.

Just updating the links to Mocha emulator. Brad (hapless genious himself) changed to a new URL. Below's the link to the Java emulator (Mocha) for the CoCo (I know; very old thread, but like to keep links up to date).

Re: Mega-Bug.

Lyle, I am still using my CoCo playing Clowns and Balloons. Was thinking of upgrading a to a PC but that MC6809 Microprocessor in it can do just about anything. I finally got Photoshop 5.0 ported on to it and 3 weeks ago I stared to run a Gaussian Blur filter on a small jpg. It's about 3/4 of the way through, and should be done in another week. It is amzing what you can do with 4 kilobytes of RAM and a 8 bit, 8Mhz CPU.
