Earthquake

Had an earthquake here at 4.34am last Friday.
This link graphically (depth and radius) shows the initial quake and the resulting aftershocks. We're still getting them.

Re: Earthquake

Wow. Must have been frightening.
That map is great! Very informative, yet easy to understand. A web graphic designer's baby, I'm sure.
It seems like the aftershocks are going on for quite some time. Be well & all around you.

Photos from Christchurch

The number of aftershocks is amazing, flotsam. Can they all be felt, or are many of them only detected by seismic equipment? Either way, that would be nerve-wracking...

You can feel most of them.
My house has not been affected structurally (I hope) but they certainly rattle things. They are getting less frequent but still quite strong.

I think my nerves would be among the "things" that get rattled. I've read that buildings in NZ have been built with earthquakes in mind, so I hope that yours is none the worse for the shaking.

Re: Earthquake

Another 11 aftershocks already today up to 4.3 on richter scale.
It's amazing that there hasn't been any loss of life.

I'm glad you're keeping us informed because the US media seems to have moved on to other things days ago.

PS: Your crashbang link isn't working.

Re: Earthquake

More earthquakes hit Christchurch - with aftershocks hitting and doing more damage.

Two aftershocks have sent survivors scrambling for safety in Christchurch, New Zealand's second largest city, after a powerful earthquake shook the city at midday, killing at least 65 people and injuring dozens more.

Flotsam - I see that you have logged into RetouchPro, so am hoping that you are well - sorry for all the deaths and damage to your country.

Ohhh, no - not again !!! Earthquake - CNN story

A series of earthquakes struck New Zealand near the city of Christchurch on Friday, causing damage and disruption in an area still recovering from a powerful quake in February.

Re: Earthquake

That's not good. A few days ago we "finally" had a little one here in LA, the first I felt since 2008.

Wow; these guys can't seem to get a break. Strange that it happened again just over a year later. Hope no one got killed or seriously injured this time.

Re: Earthquake

From BBC News: (not as bad this time - so far, at least)

A series of earthquakes has shaken the New Zealand city of Christchurch, sending residents rushing from buildings and causing minor damage.

The first 5.8 magnitude quake struck at 1358 local time (0058 GMT), the US Geological Survey said. Another of similar magnitude hit 80 minutes later.

Dozens of people suffered minor injuries but only 19 were admitted to hospital.

It comes 10 months after swathes of the city were destroyed by another quake.

Friday's first earthquake struck 26km (16 miles) north-east of the city at a depth of 4.7km. The second large event, with a magnitude estimated at 5.9, was in almost exactly the same place, the USGS said.

Aftershocks rolled on throughout the afternoon, several of them with a magnitude greater than 5, according to New Zealand's GeoNet.

Buildings were damaged, power supplies cut and the city's airport had to be closed temporarily.
