Craig... Camp following as an Army Wife.

First "tour" was ex's basic Armor school in the fall of '63 I was in the commissary when they announced that Kennedy had been shot. By the time I past the gold deposit on my way home, they had already rolled a tank up in front of it facing the street fully armed and ready for anything!

Second "tour" was ex's advanced Armor school.. '68-69. This was an adventure. Our son was born at Hunter Army Air Field on August 10, 1968. Born on a Thursday, home from the hospital on Saturday, Christened on Sunday, packers in the house Monday, moving van departs Tuesday and we arrived at Ft. Knox the following Friday. Geez.. baby is less than a week old and we're doing a PCS??

Third "tour" was 1971-'74, when my ex was teaching at the Armor School. Experienced my first tornado AND earthquake ON THE SAME DAY!.

Ahhh Ft. Knox, I remember it well.

i shld know what a 'PCS' is, but i dont. fill me in?

tornado and an earthquake on the same day? cute. and welcome to kentucky

PCS=Permanent Change of Station as opposed to TDY=Temporary Duty

The tornado/earthquake combo was really scarry. Made you feel like the world was coming to an end. Funny story...

The tornado occured about 4:30-5:00, April 2, 1972. It blew Brandenburg, Ky and Zenia, Ohio off the map. Ft. Knox was busy flying medi-vacs to Brandenburg even as the tornado was crossing Louisville. At 6:00 we were watching the local news about the tornado when the earth started moving. The sky was greenish yellow.. Really eerie. Then on the 6:00 o'clock news, the film was so fresh they hadn't had time to edit it so it was like watching home movies as far as the narration. They were interviewing some redneck..

TV GUY...Where were you when the tornado came through?
REDNECK.. I was backin up that there Chevy.
TV GUY... What did you see?
REDNECK... I looked up and saw trees and boards and all kinds of sh*t up in that cloud.

Needless to say, they had edited the film clip by the 11:00 o'clock news, but it was really funny.

PCS, ah, ok

re tornado/earthquake, nothing like mother nature to make one feel vulnerable at times. i recall the first earthquake i was in. it was in L.A. ok, that's NOT supposed to happen! the ground is NOT supposed to move! really throws out your stable data about things.

and tornados, we had one come through here not long ago, about 11 p.m. or so. i'm watching t.v. for weather reports and such and suddenly hear this freight train outside. yup, it's true... sounds like a freight train; a LARGE freight train! it hit about a half mile down the road in town. LARGE trees pulled straight up out of the ground. took a farmer's grain bin and pulled all the metal off the thing and left ALL of the grain. when they picked up the grain after the storm, the farmer figured he'd lost about a bushel of corn. the bin itself was never found.

another one came through a few years earlier. it came right up the river bank but didnt quite touch down all the way. it rode the tree tops and mowed them all off at the top like a lawn mower. strange things, tornados.

hehe, like your redneck story

Craig
