One of the best magic tricks I've ever seen.

Don't even want to know how this guy does this. Don't worry about the language; not necessary in order to enjoy this one. Gotta see this one to the end; trust me.

Re: One of the best magic tricks I've ever seen.

I used to do slight-of-hand. I still do on occassion just to mess with people that don't know that I can do any at all. Eat a wad of nasty used napkin or something. But there a lot of tricks that I can't do because of my wide palms that refusing to hold a quarter (or anything quarter-ish).

It wasn't too difficult for me to figure out his first two coin tricks. He totally gave one of them away with a tiny little manuever.

Not sure about the last one, though, because of camera angles. At the very end of it, I did notice his left fore-arm jump just a tad, which I think is because of how the trick is done. If you feel the need, watch the last trick again and watch for the smudges on the glass, especially those by the hostess's left hand. But the smudges can are difficult to completely track due to camera angle and lighting.

A plausible explanation of the last trick:

Liu Qian Magic Trick on Chinese New Year Exposed 2010

Maybe you don't wanna watch and keep the magic....

That's a cool explanation and thanks for the followup link Jim, but still, he definitely controlled the whole process flawlessly imo (but again, I'm not a magician; just enjoy seeing these things).

Re: One of the best magic tricks I've ever seen.

Was just taking a trip down Memory Lane. My father used to do slight-of-hand as did my uncle on my mother's side. So, I have a little bit of magic in me on both sides of the family. No wonder I take so well to deception and misdirection.

When I was very young, said uncle took me to see Doug Henning in concert. It was absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, I was so young that I only remember a few amazing bits-n-pieces of it.

Go to YouTube and watch some Doug Henning videos. His Rubik's Cube trick still baffles and awes me.

Re: One of the best magic tricks I've ever seen.

i have just seen the movie and that was really good. however, the last trick - i think it was a swivelling glass. i noticed before he put his hand thru, his left hand glided across to meet his right hand and i think it's then that he was sliding the glass (with the hole) to meet his right hand to push it thru.
i dont know about the first 2 tricks tho... but he is damn good!!

Nothing, but that is exactly what the Salon Forum is for - anything you want to chat about.

Re: One of the best magic tricks I've ever seen.

This guy is one of the best magicians (illusionists) in China and Japan, BTW he speaks both languages. There are tons of videos on youtube about him... he has some pretty cool stuff...

Re: One of the best magic tricks I've ever seen.

He is simply....amazing. And very, very fun to watch!

Thanks a million for the pointers, both your original post, Lyle, and your two posts, BoneAppetit. BoneAppetit, I've rearranged your url's because in this order it flows and is Part 1 and Part 2:

Part 1

Re: One of the best magic tricks I've ever seen.

Not a problem!

In honor of Lyle and BoneAppetit, here is Part 1 of Lyle's original post (which is actually also a Part 2, it turns out).

Now......didn't I warn everybody NOT to play cards with Lu Chen????

http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=hwVy_2eOfsE#t=78

Enjoy!!

Re: One of the best magic tricks I've ever seen.

"ok i want to know how he did the first 2 tricks"

I'll tell you all the second one.

The second trick requires the use of a flipper coin. This coin is hinged on the bottom and part of another coin folds out. This gives the appearance of two coins. When a certain action is done, it snaps shut and only a single coin appears. The action can be manual shutting or a jarring motion, such as hitting it from below causing it to jump up (and thus closing).

He made the mistake of giving away that his is using a flipper coin. He lays the coins out, but he adjust one ever so slightly and the other coin moves with it. He gives away that the two coins are actually one - a flipper coin.

He palms a coin in his left, then turns palm up and slaps the table. This reveals the palmed coin and causes the flipper coin to jump up and snap shut.

Illusion complete, except for that one tiny little mistake.
