Re: Newbie from MI Say, "Yah," to da You-Pee, eh? It was a champaign slogan from many years ago to bolster interest in the UP. It was around the time that Da Yoopers were just starting to get famous. Did I just date myself? It's the second week of deer camp And all our friends are here We drink, play cards, and shoot the bull But never shoot no deer In my neck of the woods, folks in the UP are called Yoopers. Folks in the mitten are called Trolls (because we are under the bridge). And folks that live on the Mackinac Island are called Fudgies. Mmm... you haven't lived until you've had Mac fudge. We've had fist fights over it. And now we have Tim Allen doing radio commercials for MI. Everytime we hear one of his commercials everyone starts yelling, "Buzz Lightyear!" Enjoy your stay here. Woo!

Re: Newbie from MI Well, thanks for that info on the 'slogan'. Funny how I only recently heard the Troll thing too. I have though known of the Fudgies on & have enjoyed the fudge there myself :-) Good ole Tim Allen, my boys here it and think "Buzz Lightyear", now my hubby & I think "Tooltime" (what ever that show was he was on, we watched probably all episodes. Sounds like your deer camp is an awesome time, actually sounds like a lot of deer camps...lots of fun & no deer. LOL Thanks again for getting me informed more on MI. Now I have to be sure to inform my boys we are "TROLLS" :-) Denise

Re: Newbie from MI Fudgies aren't locals; that's what the locals in the Straits area call tourists. A more recent label is "cone-suckers." "Say ya to da UP too, eh?" was a takeoff on the slogan "Say YES to Michigan" adopted by the tourism people a few years back. Here's another regionalism: people in Northern Michigan (which is to say the northern Lower Peninsula), refer to everything south of some undefined line as "down below", as in "I gotta go down below next week."
