Sam - maybe you and Chris can work out a deal with his friend, the Italian cook, to send pots and pots of her pasta to Zimbabwe -- either it would help stem the threat of famine, or, if uneaten, be usable as building material for repairing the country's infrastructure. (It might come in handy also if you return -- for hurling at any potential intruders.)

If you find that you cannot return to Zim due to the present unrest, remember that "Home" is not a building, it's wherever you and your family are together. I hope that your husband is in Scotland with you and the kids now; if not, that you will all be together soon -- and for many years to come. Zim, the land, will always be waiting. Dictators come and go, but the land Endures.

Howdy all ...

Just me 'n' the kiddos here - the hubby decided to stay and be a hero on the frontline ... Also, with our hyper-inflation, the cost of an air ticket is the equivalent of buying 35 horses - yep, THIRTY-FIVE!!! So he decided he'd rather have the nags.

CJ - you've got me thinking with your pasta theories. You may have unwittingly discovered the revolutionary material of the 21st century! Work on that one ...

Chris - please let me know if you see any fringe shows worth checking out ...

Sam

Sam,

Why didn't you buy the horses and ride to Scotland ? I'm perusing the Fringe program at this moment but as usual it will be a case of guesswork. I tend to avoid the most effusive reviews and this has paid off in the past with some good stuff.
The women I'm staying with have a love of slumming it in the boozers on South Bridge street with the result that during the afternoons entertainment your scribe is praying for a chamberpot under the seat. After about 4 entertainments its over to the Loon Fung for Dim Sung and then home where more Italian Rocket Liqueur is imbibed. After 4 days I'm begging for mercy !

38 hours and 52 minutes, eh? I have a suspicion I might need to call on the services of SuperHorse for that ... I wonder how he would cope with merging on the Autoroute?

I must say you are a mine of information, CJ - I shall print that out and keep it handy just in case ... you just never know.

Chris - sounds like you're in for a hard time. I'm sure everyone will join me in praying for your safety.

Sam

I heard on the BBC on public radio that the deadline had passed and 3000 white farmers were still ok. I only listen to that when going to sleep, so didn't get it all.
Don't those misguided black Zimbabweans know that without their fellow white's contribution to bring civility and knowlege that their country will just blow up or sink.

When civility moves out, terrorism and crime move in. They will create another Somalia. It's a shame the world didn't do something about the situation before it got this bad because now it will cost them in money and lives to clean up the mess and help the starving people. It's sickening really. Especially when you think that Zimbabwe was once a very prosperous nation.

Money may interrupt the eviction order - A Zimbabwe High Court Judge ruled against the eviction order of one farmer because he had a mortgage on the property and the government had not consulted the bank.

The news said that other farmers have mortgages on their land, as well as other bank debts, giving the banks a “legal right of interest” in the disposal of land.

Per MSNBC, "Economists estimate white farmers owe the nation’s private banks at least $70 million in annual loans, excluding mortgage." I wonder if the banks would rather see the current farmers stay on the land, at least until some of the loans are paid?

We'll see what happens today. mad bob is giving a "state of the nation" address to the Zim parliament today and the political analysts down here feel this will be his main topic of discussion.

I wonder what these countries, including India would be like if Europeans had never ruled them. You'd think that some would have made it, though as far as I know, there is not more than one succesful black run country in African. I guess SA is but don't know much about it either. Why is it that most of Europe is successful, America, I think because we got our laws and morals for Europe, but the rest of the world is pretty screw up, except for some Asian countries. There is not one Arab democracy, turkey is closest.
