E-mail warning

I just received this is e-mail, and I don't know if it's true or not, but it is good advice either way.

"Keep a watch out for people standing near you in the checkout line at retail stores, restaurants, grocery stores, etc., who have a camera cellphone in their hand. With these phones, they can take a picture of your credit card, which gives them your name, number and expiration date.

CBS reported this type of identification theft as one of the fastest growing scams today.

Be aware of your surroundings and forward this information on to your family and friends. It's critical, especially with the various shopping seasons upon us now."

Only if they have a camera cellphone that is much better than mine (and mine's supposedly pretty good). Inside, taking a photograph of something as small as a credit card from "standing nearby" distance I very very very much doubt I could capture even one of those pieces of information, let alone do it in anything approaching a subtle manner.

But as camera phones get more sophisticated it may well become possible, so it's as well to be careful anyway. Looking this rumour up on the internet, there appear to be no recorded cases of card information being harvested in this way, but the general consensus is that it's not something that can be ruled out in the medium term.

An episode on the tv program Tru Calling showed this type of scam...granted it was a television show.

That's what I thought. But not being familiar with them, and as fast as technology moves, I wasn't sure. But in the end, better safe than sorry. Who knows? Tomorrow Best Buy might have one at 5 megapixels, and faster than anything we know today!!

It does also show a woman talking to dead people and going back in time (if I'm thinking of the right show)...
