Re: New Members Introductions, Biographical Ramblings Etc

Hi there everybody,
I guess that it is time that I should jump in since I am new to this Forum also. My name is Terry Padgett. I live in Jacksonville, Florida, but I am building a house in St. Augustine, Florida and will be moving there in a couple of weeks. I came to photogrphy from a little different way than most of you. I was a police officer for twenty-eight years. Back in 1975 I became an evidence technician (what they call now a CSI). I was given a course in crime scene photograhy. I started out with an old Graflex camera. I later moved on to other things. I was a Hostage Negotiator for several years, and then I spent my last twelve years as a Traffic Homicide Investigator. During that time my interest in photography stayed with me.
I am now retired. I decided to retire after the birth of my twin girls, Rachel and Sarah. They are six now. I did not want to put them in day care.
I have been collecting old family photographs for the last few years. I have been scanning and restoring them in Photoshop CS2. Many of them have been damaged over time. I thought that I was doing a pretty good job until I found this Forum. When I see the work done by the members here, I see that I know just about enough to be dangerous. I have just scratched the surface of what can be done. I am very excited about what I can learn here. I am soaking up the information every day now. I very much enjoy the friendly way in which eveyone shares their knowledge. Thank you all for being there.
By the way, if anybody happens to be coming down this way let me know if I can help you in any way. As I said, I will be in the St. Augustine area, ten minutes from the World Golf Village.
Terry

Welcome to RTP Terry.

I had to laugh at your comment stating you knew just enough to be dangerous because I think we all feel that way at times no matter our experience. Nevertheless, you have found a great spot with friendly people and lots and lots of learning opportunities.

Welcome to RetouchPro, Noud (ikagami)!

Your English is fine, and certainly better than my knowledge of Dutch (the Google Translate page has not included Dutch yet).

Sounds like you have years of knowledge and experience, so you can enjoy doing the Challenges as well as work on images that folks need help retouching/restoring. Have you tried your hand at Photo Art yet? Also, our new Photography Forum has a monthly competition plus threads for showing off your favorite images. (like maybe your Maine Coon cats or views of the Netherlands?)

Enjoy!

TerryLP, when I first joined this website, I had been using Photoshop for years, and thought I knew a lot about using it -- then saw what others here could do and could explain about it -- I thought I'd gone back to 4th grade. It's a great place for newbies, and a great place for intermediates, and even a great place for advanced users (who get to strut their stuff). I'm still learning, and hopefully able to help some others learn some of the things that I know. The best thing is we all get to do what we really enjoy doing!

Hi Adam and welcome to RetouchPro.

Just about anyone here will recommend Photoshop Restoration & Retouching by Katrin Eismann which is pretty much the restorer's bible.

Re: New Members Introductions, Biographical Ramblings Etc

Hi
I'm Erin from Canberra Australia. Currently working at the National film and Sound Archive, scanning the documentation collection of photos, negs, trannies and printed material.

I have been doing photography for 11 years now (since I was 15) and have been using both digital and analogue (as we call it).

Look forward to finding some very helpful people here, esspecially regarding retouching silvering photos, and cracked glass negs and slides.
