Question Painter IX question re:Alt key

When I'm in the Cloner brushes and I happen to have the alt key depressed and click on the canvas, I get (momentarily) a number 1 with a green dot over it.. sometimes beside it. What does that mean and will my painting be affected afterward? I can't find anything on this.

The <Alt> key in general is some sort of picker.

If you're using a brush it will pick up the colour at the clicked point, if you're using the Stamp tool (Photoshop) it will define the source.
In this case you are redefining the clone source, if you were using some "original" and now you <Alt> clicked on your painting, then the painting has become the clone source.

You can test this by clicking on a piece of canvas that hasn't been painted yet - you just get white!
