layers in Paint Shop Pro 7

In Paint Shop Pro I am touching up a bunch of dark skinned people with white clothes on, and am wondering how to bring up the brightness level sufficient to see to correctly draw freehand selections. Do I create another layer to bring up, draw the selections and then dump the layer without losing the changes made in each selection? I am freehand selecting, moving the selection to an adjustment layer, where I bring up brightness. If I just raise the background brightness, make selections, brighten them up, then undo the brightness, I should think I would lose the other changes I made, right? Layers look like the way to go. Ideas? This involves wedding photos.
