what Photoshop settings do people start PS with usually

Just out of interest, whats best setting to start a painting in PS CS2.

I currently am paintings half the size of my painting to save on memory as I want a painting 24inch by 24inch I start at 12inch by 12 inch and when I have finished I use size and enlarge it by 1inch until the painting is 24 by 24.

Is there a better way of doing this without losing any quality.

I also have 300 pixels/inch and color mode RGB 8 bit.

In advanced i have a profile set as adobe RGB (199
and pixel aspect ration set to square

should i be using something better than these settings

The 300 DPI setting is good if you _ever_ think you will go to high resolution print with a piece. Adobe RGB is okay to work in since some filters are not available in the other color spaces. Just be sure to convert to CMYK TIFF if you sending out for high res output.

As far as enlarging. This can get iffy depending on where you are going with the piece. If you are rendering for realistic purposes (or high res output), I wouldn't do it. If you are doing an "artsy" painting with lots of texture and brush strokes, you can probably get away with it. The solution is to get more ram and work on the piece at final output resolution. I know, they are big files. I do several posters for magazine quality print at a finished size of 18 x 24. I work from professionsally digitized art work that is scanned in at the output size. They run 300+mb, but print beautifully.
