Pixels to inches when making a new canvas

When I want a new canvas the window always comes up in pixels rather than inches. This is something new and frustrating since I must keep changing from pixels to inches. What did I do to cause this situation? More important how do I get a default in inches rather than pixels.

you dont mention what software you're using.

Using CS with Vista

have you tried changing the settings in the info palette?

Photoshop > File > New gives you a dialog box where you can set all canvas size options: width, height, ppi. units

also, change Preset to > US Paper

You can change ruler units in Edit > Preferences > Units and Rulers. Do this with no image open.

you can also change ruler units by right-clicking on ruler.

If you don't use PS, look in Help for your application

Thanks for your responses but you won't believe this. Opened up a window and it came up in inches. Didn't do a thing. Evidently when I closed the computer down last night whatever I had done was cancelled.
