monitor calbration

Could somebody please suggest a good monitor calibration package. I assume this was discussed here before, but somehow I am getting mostly old posts dating back to 2003 or so. Ideally I would be looking at under $200.
My understanding is that Spider 2 is the most commonly used, but it gets a bit confusing from this point on, Spider comes in different flavors from express to spider suite, there is also hardware involved...but apparently according to one of the reviews I just read the actual hardware could not be used with LCD monitors....
Thank you in advance.

Pavel

Re: monitor calbration

I've been very happy with my Huey II unit. It's inexpensive, calibrates well, and - something a lot of the other units don't do - regularly monitors room lighting to adjust for ambient light.

Here's an Xrite i1:

I never used this model, but Xrite is a leader in this field.

Re: monitor calbration

we use an earlier version of the xrite i1, nice piece of equipment but the software you get also makes a big difference in how much control you have...

Re: monitor calbration

well, I have the spyder3elite and I`m very happy with the thing - I compared it to xrite (eye-one) but on my wide-gamut monitor spyder3 did a much better job. just check it out at www.datacolor.com. if you look for something more affordable I was have seen the new spyder3express for just 89 ... but, again I have an elite since 2 years and I could not be more happy ...

Re: monitor calbration

If you can afford a mac, you will not need calibrators and a lot of things more.

Re: monitor calbration

Monitor calibration is always needed regardless of platform.
