Doesn't double-clicking the hand in CS5 just zoom the image to fit? cmd/ctrl-0 is a quick shortcut for that (it's also on the View-menu) and should work in all versions.

I'm pretty sure you could go full screen with CS3 in XP. (Don't remember what happened to the taskbar tho, and I only have CS4 and CS5 installed at the moment so can't verify.)

So... just maximize it? (Tip; on Win7 just drag the Window to the top of the screen)
Then it will fill the screen, and you have menus and Windows taskbar... You will have the pan/scroll limits though.
If you are in full screen you should be able to bring up the taskbar by hitting the Windows-key? (You also have other shortcuts like alt-tab to switch programs).

---
As reference for the whole thread; there are 3 main view options (cycle by hitting the f-key).
  • Standard screen mode (In OS X you can turn on/off Application Frame.)
  • Full screen with menu bar (palettes visible by default)
  • Full screen (palettes hidden by default)

Tip: in all the view modes you can change the background color around the image by right-clicking it (I prefer a dark neutral grey).

Re: why don't share photoshop workspace screenshot

i want that screen mode because of the space i gain from under the toolbar and scrolls (right/bottom)
the problem is that cs5 will isolate me from everything - will not show any notification or other messages from other applications

when cs5 is in full screen with menu it will hide taskbar - if i press the win key will bring back the taskbar until i activate cs5 window again

I guess there's not much you can do about that. Maybe just make a feature request to Adobe...

Have you tried turning on auto hide the task bar in windows 7. Will stay hidden until you move the mouse or the edge where the task bar is hidden but should still pop up when a program such as messenger receives an incoming message. Found this link through a google search.
