Photo mosaics

Hi guys,

I'm trying to find some good pro software for creating photo mosaics for a project. The idea is to use many images say more than five hundred images and place them using a single source photo as a reference. The program needs to be able to recognize the tone and colour of the images and place them accordingly so they would make up the source image when viewed from a distance. It can either be a PS plug in or stand alone. I have found quite a few software programs so far but none of them seem to be able use the tonal range of the images, they just place the images randomly. Any advice would be helpful.

Well a few PS tutorials but really you seem to need specialized software

Those do look quite cool Nancy. Didn't know Studio Artist was able to do these type Photomosaics. Awesome stuff.

Thanks those are really cool images by the way. Nicely done. I have managed to find a program that seems to work - Andre Mosaic http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic
It's freeware which is obviously great. I downloaded and played with it last night and it seems to work but I was using really low res images I pulled from the net. The next stage would be for me to find some high res images and see how well it works. That's if my machine doesn't explode
