Converting 8 bit images to 16 bit - any benefits?

I agree we have beaten this to within an inch of its life - I do not want to damage anymore innocent pixels

The plug in referred to for repairing the histogram I believe is Histo Fix, from what I understand it works by adding noise to the entire image. So by the sound of things it degrades the image to hide the banding!

Being curious I did a search for histogram repair it appears that there is another in Power Retouche. This one is said to repair missing values by evaluating neighbouring pixels and if they span the missing value the plug in will adjust either neighbouring pixels to assume the missing value.

Not having seen or used either I will not comment
