iOS 5: Anybody?

I understand it's been a rough day in Appleland with their servers being slammed and folks having a hard time downloading and installing the updates.

I ended up doing the download-only option on my iPad 2 in the office, because iTunes warned me to use the computer I usually sync with (which is home) lest my data get wiped. So I will try again later, though I don't know where the download went (the iPad or the iMac). Hopefully I don't have to suck down 722 megs again...

I didn't have any problems with the slew of desktop-only updates (10.7.2, etc.)

What was your experience?

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

Oh, and I hear iPad 1 users are actually losing functionality-!

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

Like what functionality? I have an iPad 1 and updated earlier today. I assume the "5" in iOS 5 refers to the number of attempts it takes to update

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

Loss of some gestures, supposedly. There are several threads on Apple's support forum. My daughter has the older iPad and I have the newer, but I think we'll wait until the weekend...

BTW, here are instructions for bypassing iTunes to possibly avoid some installation trouble:

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

Whew! I had already upgraded to iTunes 10.5 earlier today and had to re-install (as I have had to do each time for the last two upgrades, I think) but the upgrade for my iPod Touch to iOS5 seems to have gone smoothly! It is running iOS5, has restored the apps, music, video and photos, upgraded the camera so I can use the volume button to snap photos, has the new apps - guess I'll have to learn how to use the new goodies!

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

I just did a quick and completely painless upgrade to iOS 5 on an iPad 2!

In the office I had downloaded the installers manually from here (we have 3 different iDevices):

http://techie-buzz.com/mobile-news/i...oad-links.html

Instructions to install are here:

http://techie-buzz.com/mobile-news/h...smanually.html

I had to do the Restore option as Upgrade was not accepted, but no problem. I had previously synced the iPad to the iMac and after the wipe, iTunes just restored everything. Lock and home screen images came back, wireless was remembered, apps were still in the folders I set up!

iOS 5 gives you the option to backup to either iCloud or the Mac. On the iPad 2 you can used multi-finger gestures to switch apps (swiping, pinching, etc.) which removes the need to mash the Home button all the time. Plus all the other new features.

Glad I did my research and didn't try to update live during the week!

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

I upgraded my iPad2 and phone last night without any issues. I downloaded the newest version of iTunes to my computer first then proceeded to upgrade the devices. No issues and both were done in one take.

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

Hmm, on my daughter's iPad 1 all went well except for her apps being restored (?). She will try to do that manually. Photos and books were OK though.

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

hmmm, i had thought my ipad2 would notify me that the new ios was out, yet it didnt. and since i stay away from itunes as much as possible, i guess i've just missed this. are there any nasty side effects for the ipad2? any difficulties? anyone lose anything? i hate installing new o/s'es... so much risk, so little benefit. i've got thousands of files and quite a few apps on this thing. i'd hate to lose it, even if i do have a love/hate going on with it. lol.

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

Craig, iTunes is the place for getting info for your iPad. My iPad 2 update went fine best I can tell. My daughter is having to manually restore her apps on an iPad 1 so we'll see how that plays out.

Just make sure you have a sync backup and back it up too!

If it makes you feel any better, I only have Lion on an external drive so far...

Craig, are your files stored within an application? If yes, they should be OK as long as you create a backup within iTunes. iTunes is the place where you have stored all your applications with files within them. But really, who knows what is going to happen

Mike, are you happy with Lion? I am still on Snow Leopard and I am not in rush to install Lion. I have read it is not as good as Snow Leopard and they have made few ugly changes.

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

[
Installed 5.0 yesterday on my iPad 1 as well as upgrade for ITunes. When I began the install for ITunes it displayed a message that it was backing up all my apps etc. It took a good 30 minutes but it installed ok. I then got a window telling me that the OS update was available.

I let it install and it also took about 30 minutes. I got a window telling me that it was re-installing my apps. And a message saying my iPad had been restored to factory settings. So I went through the setup again following screen instructions.

All app icons etc appeared to be normal, but I could not get anything to open. So I re-synced and finally all is working properly, at least as of now. Nothing was lost in any of this, but what a pain. And as you say Craig, for minimum gain and some more built- in apps which can cost if you don't watch how you use them.

Clutter...clutter...clutter.

Re: iOS 5: Anybody?

creativeretouch, I don't actually use Lion often, though I keep the external install of it updated and ready to go (including a SL Server VM). I do use Lion Server in the office, not as a server but as a Mac-lab admin station, and there are some interface annoyances and such, but nothing critical. I do prefer the look/feel of SL though and will use it for awhile yet.
