Just change the order. Invert the layer and change the blend mode and fill first and apply the high pass next, that'll have the same live preview as in your tutorial.
I agree that when you change the blur, the technique is better than the high pass technique in some cases, however what you showed was the Gaussian blur and unfortunately from my experience most users won't experiment a lot and try different filters, so if you want to show that you can use different filters from Gaussian blur, show it or at least write that you're not limited to Gaussian blur in the first step.

Just my 2 cents, I always like to see some more people who care about what they're really doing to their images .

Yes, that would work and it's simpler. Thanks!

This technique is very powerful when used with other filters for removing clothing wrinkles (especially on intricate fabric such as wedding dresses), but I never took the time to do another tutorial.
