Re: why is my cs5 histogram set always at colors?

As far as I know there is no way to set RGB as the default, which is pretty annoying. One work around is to set it to RGB and always keep one image file open and its window minimized. That way whenever you open a new image the view will be RGB. The fact that your last setting is not saved in the preferences file when you close PS is likely an error of omission by the programmers.

Re: why is my cs5 histogram set always at colors?

I have seen and used another workaround very similar to Murray's. This could be set up to run an action/script the first time you open Photoshop through Scripts Event Manager or a single key triggered Action.

- Make sure your default workspace has the histogram open or the action sets the WorkSpace to have the histogram open
- The Action on PS startup creates a small (e.g. 10px x 10 px) Lab mode document. The histogram comes up as Composite mode
- Now when you open up any RGB image the histogram will come up as RGB instead of color

Go figure
