ineligible for upgrade to CS6 from CS2

I have Adobe Production Premium CS2 (2006).

I originally bought production standard CS1 in 2004 and upgraded via adobe.com store to Adobe Production Premium CS2.

This year I plan on a new computer hardware build and upgrading to CS6.

Since I missed the 1 month window March-April for CS2 upgrade what would you suggest I do? I want a legitimate upgrade.
Is my only option to pay for CS5.5 upgrade to get the serial number and then pay for CS6 upgrade from CS5.5?

You might want to consider the Creative Cloud option.

Re: ineligible for upgrade to CS6 from CS2

Two other considerations:
  • Can you still find Creative Suite 5.5 for sale?
  • If yes, then it's worth comparing whether buying CS6 licenses outright would be less expensive than buying CS5.5 then upgrading
Creative Cloud is an option but add up the monthly payments over time and you may find you'll pay for licenses several times over between releases, especially compared to the upgrade price.

That said, starting with CS6 Adobe plans to force users to upgrade every single release --> i.e., in the future if you don't upgrade to CS7 then they'll charge full retail price for CS8 whenever CS8 is released.

For a legitimate upgrade this is the route:

Yes
Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium Upgrade from CS2/CS3
Platform: Windows Vista / 7
Price: $949. (Old Version) from Amazon.com currently
I only need the serial # and not to actually install it.

Adobe CS6 Production Premium Upgrade from CS5.5
Win 7
$375. download or DVD-ROM box
from Adobe.com (Individual CS upgrades only on Adobe.com.)

now if I were to buy it without any upgrade the Adobe CS6 Production Premium full Price: $1,739.99 from Amazon.com . So it still is a significant savings. Possibly next time I upgrade in 2015 or beyond I will do their monthly subscription price. I think this version will last me 2 or 3 years though.

Re: ineligible for upgrade to CS6 from CS2

Ok.

Quick point:
  • Adobe's new releases tend to be spaced ~18 mos apart:
    • If you upgrade every 18 mos then using the software costs you $375/18mo = $21/mo
    • If you upgrade every 24 mos then using the upgrade costs you $375/24mo = $15/mo
    • Creative Cloud rental price = $49/mo (plus you have to buy the package from scratch if you ever decide to buy outright again)
So by renting you pay for an upgrade every 8 mos at current prices for both. And you have no flexibility to space out the timing of upgrades.

For me, since I upgrade every release anyway, it works out much more economically to buy than to rent, though your situation may be different and of course you need to evaluate your situation accordingly.
