Nik Software swallowed by Google

Read the news here. Reaction to this is pretty much 100% negative, with the assumption that Google will nibble off a bit of code (Snapseed) for their own use and ditch the rest.

But for a billion dollars I must admit I'd sell whatever it was Google wanted. For even half that! ;-)

Re: Nik Software swallowed by Google

I have a feeling Google is working on a stand alone graphics program to go up against Adobe Photoshop. Just a theory.

Joe, that's most certainly what it looks like. Adobe has become so unwieldy that a sleek application could be competitive. The really nice things you can do with pictures inside Chrome (SumoPaint, Pixlr) is certainly pointing in that direction.

Trey Ratcliff's discussion on the NIK buyout was quite interesting.

Re: Nik Software swallowed by Google

The closet thing Google has is Picasa, which some think will absorb Nik technology. BTW, Apple is working on some sort of graphics/imaging app (the patent application got out).

Re: Nik Software swallowed by Google

Snapseed was such an unusual direction for Nik to go, I can't help but think they were trying to get Google's attention. Sort of like back in the days when people would develop something just so Microsoft would buy them out.
