GIMP vs Adobe Photoshop

I use Adobe Photoshop CS, but I was wondering how GIMP , the free software compares to Adobe. Can anyone that has used both tell, me how GIMP compares to Adobe and how hard it would be to learn to use it after using Adobe.

Free vs $$$$$$$$$-! ;-)

Which PS CS are you on? CS[1],2,3,4,5,6?

Since GIMP is free and you have some version of PS, go ahead and download GIMP and see for yourself.

One thing I really like is that layered files can be shared back and forth between the two apps, which is perfect if one uses PS at work and can't afford it at home.

PS: On the Mac, GIMP now runs natively (no more need for the X11 environment).

Free goes a long way. If you're on OSX look at Pixelmator too, given that it's extremely cheap. In the case of GIMP, why not try it out? You don't really have anything to lose. No trial will expire. In my own experience Open Source can be annoying in terms of finding up to date information, but there are cases where certain aspects can be surprisingly good.

Speaking of open source, there are groups that use Blender for 3D, GIMP for imaging and Audacity for audio editing and put some some excellent short films.

Re: GIMP vs Adobe Photoshop

GIMP's my crutch Runfox. I do have CS5 (use it to process my RAW files), but most if not all my editing is done in GIMP since I rarely need 16 bit precision. That's one of the big issues keeping a lot of folk from using GIMP. High precision bit editing is coming (indeed they've implemented it in the new 2.9 Beta build of GIMP; see the link below) so pretty soon there will be one less reason to use PS (but I will admit, there is no tool better for processing RAW files then ACR and I've tried more then a few open source programs; not not happy with them).

Blender is really an unusually good open source project. It has some exceptional tools, then other things are less great. Their viewport system isn't that great. They lack a unified dynamics system unless you plan to use bullet for everything. They lack a muscle system, which can be used for far more than character muscles. It lacks a really robust renderer or strong support for some of the commercial packages. If their current rendering engine matures well, it would still be an amazing piece of software, regardless of the price points you compare against.

Re: GIMP vs Adobe Photoshop

I am on linux and tried the Gimp - guess I used photoshop too much in the past as I cant get used to the gimp - I dont like it at all so I run photoshop unde WINE on linux. If I couldn't use photoshop on linux I would try and use paintshop pro on linux under wine.

That's great PS and other apps work well under wine. Gives people more options.
