Capture One Auto Mask - Not fit for purpose?

I recently bought Capture One Pro 8. I was experimenting. I hadn't used the auto masking in C1 previous versions. When I tried it in Pro8 it seems to be absolutely hopeless. I find it hard to believe it can be as bad as it seems. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong. Has anyone had a similar experience? Is there a trick to getting it to perform properly?
