Creative Portraits: Ella

Another photo I took on holiday recently of a friend's grand-daughter (11 months). Ella's parents agreed to let me post this photo and any results at RP only.

Elle, that's really lovely, thank you! She wasn't crying, nor had been actually. I posted this because it was a better quality one than most that I took of her. Here's another of her smiling.....

Such a sweet baby! We have our own Ella, my neice's daughter, who will be 1 year old in April.

For your Ella, I played around with levels, and increased the saturation. Then I over-sharpened, and used buzz simplifier. Then played around with selective colors.

After I liked the way the image looked, I added a texture and used the edit-fade command to set the blend mode to hard light to get a high key sketch. Then, continued playing, duplicated the layer, changed blend mode to color dodge, inverted the layer, and applied gaussian blur. Her hair color was off, so I used the eraser at low opacity to bring back some of her original color. Then gently smudged her face to make it baby smooth, like I'm sure it really is.

Well, I think that's it. I was experimenting and didn't keep very good notes. I wish I had, because I think I'm going to want to duplicate this effect on my babies!

After fiddling in Painter with this and still not happy with it, I opened it in PSP8.1. On a duped layer, Virtual Painter/Collage - Dodge 50% approx.

Here you go, Pauline! Hope your friend likes my creation. I do enjoy these so-called soft "pencil sketch" effects.
Ella's a beautiful baby, so cute and cuddly-looking! I love babies!

Thank you Elle! Actually i just replaced the image with another i consider better! The earlier one was a bit darker.
How i achieved this look - Using channel mixer adj, I changed it to b&w, trying to keep the contrast low. Duped the image and applied filter - median on lowest setting. Also filter- noise - despeckle.
Then i used the dodge and burn tools all over the image.
I also observed if you invert the image and apply "softlight" blend, you get some interesting results. Well, I did that too, to this image.
Then merged and repeated with the dodge/burn tools. Dodged out much of the bckgr and did a border with style-bevel and inner shadow.
Thank you once again for your kind words.

Christine... Your first watercolor was just wonderful! Did you do that in Painter?

She is a little living doll... thanks Neve for posting..

First was painted in Painter 8, then in Photoshop.. played with some watercolor brushes used 17 Brush heavy flow scattered" and then blended the two versions.

A custom sketch.. using the same finished version ..
Have larger copies if she wants them..
