I thought your man might want to hangout in New York for a while so I borrowed an image of Time Square found elsewere on this site and slipped it into the background.

Can't remember what else I did (one of those, I-wonder-what-will-happen-if-I-do-this, projects). There are no fewer than 5 filters applied some on the BG, some on the FG, some on duplicate layers and some on the whole thing.

I think it came out okay.

This was done while experimenting using Deep Paint Digital Artist. It was very different than anything I've done before.

Two layers:
* Bottom background: Clone tool - Dry Material - Chalk Flat. Just kind if daubbed here and there for an underpainting effect.
* Top detail: Brush tool - Cloner Ex - Pencil cloner

Different in terms of "outcome" and the detail layer.

The "underpainting below" was quite a bit less detailed and has different texture than what I've done before. And since I can't "sketch" worth beans (still mousing ), the detail pencil layer was treading on thin ice for yours truly!

I did a little over sharpening, diplace, desat, aniso, lots of painting on masks.

How about a pencil sketch? I got rid of the background desaturated the image and used the graphite_2 plugin of the gimp. I played around with the trc curves to get the sketch the way I wanted. The grayscale is a layer under the graphite_2 layer to give some depth. Finally, the color original is at the bottom of the layer stack. I used some masking to let some of the color back into the image for the face and neck.

Nicely done, Tim. One of the best of this type of effect I've seen in some time. You do have the Gimp touch!

I oversharpened with FocalBlade, and then got rid of excess noise with mild buZZ. Then went over face and neck with different smudge brushes. Adjust color and saturation. Add background (which is a digital backdrop from a collection I bought).

Bravo Andrew! Great painted effect + the background is perfect!

You inspired me again...
* Duplicated background
* Added a layer below that and filled with white
* Back to duplicated background layer: added a layer mask and painted with black to isolate (knockout) subject
* Merged top two layers
* Over sharpened (Unsharp Mask)
* Buzz Simplifier 2 (this rendered some of the interesting color highlights)
* Sharpened again
* Smoothed (smudged) a few places
* Saved/closed
* Opened in Painter 8
* Went over with Blender > Grainy Blender
* Saved/closed
* Opened in Photoshop again
* Duplicated Background
* Sharpened with Unsharp Mask (270,2)
* Added a layer mask and airbrushed black to suppress some areas that needed to be toned down

Thank you Andrew, for sharing your creativity and giving me an idea for a different approach.

Duped bottom layer
L2 - Impressionist/Conte: Unsmudged
L2 - erased to reveal eyes, lips and nose

Merged layers and added borders.
I selected the gray border colour and used
Greg's Pool Shadow (free filter)

Started out taking 2 snapshots, one of lighting effect (trimoon's pencil sketch modified), another of charcoal sketch filter, and on a white layer painted with history brush (chalk brush). Duped this and applied danny's impr filter. Lowered the opacity. Merged.

Wow! Nice combination of effects, Judy.

I like the hint of abstractness mixed with "realism."
