This cute little guy is a nextdoor neighbor.

Let's see what you can do with him!

I'm experimenting with a loose watercolor effect here. There isn't supposed to be a lot of detail.

I kind of like this look because it doesn't have a lot of detail and, therefore, does not look (to me) like a photo, which IMO is the point of this hobby.

I'm leaving out the "how to" for the time being it because involves an unpublished Photoshop action, Corel Painter and the Virtual Painter and Impressionist plugins (with a custom preset). If you're interested, send me an e-mail (not PM) and I'll package up all the gory details.

He is adorable! You just have to wonder what thoughts are going through that little mind . . .

Here's my attempt, done in Painter IX, mostly with the Captured Bristle for his hair, and the Just Add Water Blender for his face. I'm not real happy with his forehead, but it wasn't very good in the original picture, and I've just plain run out of time to play around.

And, yes, Danny, this is the kind of portrait a Grandma likes to have!

Agreed... It definitely adds to the challenge when you've got a problem pic to start with. His eyes come to mind on this one.

The tribe at POTF has definitely spoken on my interpretation! (LOL)

This is certainly a lovely interpretation, Patricia, something anyone would appreciate. You've got a great style.

Nice contrasty interpretation on this one P... This is a great effect when one can pull it off (and you did).

And yes, indeed, little Alex is a handful. Fortunately for me, he's someone else's handful!
