Found this pic on the net. To me she slightly resembles U.S. television actress Calista Flockhart ("Ally McBeal").

With BW to start with, I'll bet there will be some interesting sketchy=chalky-charcoal interpretations on this one.

Have fun!

Like Steve's 2nd one, I used Impressionist on mine. I enlarged the image and applied a Levels adjustment before getting into "arty mode." See the Layers palette snapshot for how-to progression.

Here is Imitation gray pencil sketch. I use Photoshop CS2 only. I don't use Impressionist and Painter.

I added some color to eyes and mouth and then used..

Graphic Pen (black/dark red)
Chalk and Charcoal
Colored Pencil
..all blended together with the original.

Nice picture to work with

Funny how a greyscale image seems to bring out the best in the folks.
Congratulations to all.
Special to...
- Danny, you found just the right mixture there.
- Steve, the "other look", how did you do that one?

That's a good start.
Most times, however, you will need to mix in something which puts the details back in (eyes, lips etc..).
Maybe you could blend back a bit of the original, or maybe do a more detailed sketch layer and use masks to apply the details over the looser sketch.
Danny's quite a master of this technique of blending parts from different layers, and quite often he's REAL nice (like above) and posts the layer palette. Have a look there.

(Impressionist and Painter are cool, but PS has so many ways to do art you're not at much of a disadvantage. Look around for "Smudge Painting" and "Art History Brush" and have lotsa fun)

Inspired by Steve's creative results (is that Panopticum's engraver? cool effect, regardless), I got to fiddling around again... and guess what? Didn't use Impressionist at all on this one!

I used Photoshop's Find Edges filter and the Little InkPot Sketcher and Virtual Painter plugins, instead. See the Layer Palette snapshot for the layer progression.

Note: If you happen to have Virtual Painter, try the Oil Painting effect (Distortion=0) on a desaturated Find Edges layer. It gives it kind of a watercolor or pen used on wet paper look.

If I had more time, I would have opened the Photoshop result in Painter and used the Just Add Water brush to smooth out some of the jagged edges. I'll do that sometime down the road.

As an exercise, I tried to do everything just using Painter. Won't be doing this again so soon. It's much easier to set everything up in Photoshop and leave just the painting for Painter.

Didn't come out quite the way I'd imagined, but I couldn't let down my friend Craig, so here goes.....

Way to go on the Painter interp., Rô. Tough to do top-to-bottom. I still struggle mightily with that pgm. and keep falling back into my comfort zone (Impressionist). A+ on taking a swipe at the colors, too.

- - - - -

Very creative, Craig, esp. the frame-inside-frame version. I know what you mean about this one inspiring many interpretations.

Ro, by now you have probably seen Craig's post. He guessed it was Engraver, and was right.

Can't give him too big a thumbs up. He had just recommended that plugin to me. 8=)

Made an effort to keep this simple.
Used Sketchmaster (several times for various textures)
Nik filters (midnight, colorize, sunshine)
Various blend modes.
Added shadows, catchlights.
Hue & Sat adj.
Contrast adj.
light simplification.
Simple black frame
Typical handwork

thanks danny it's the eyes. she's just so... there.

i've been playing with psp's scripts. the frame in frame was done using a bevel script. and the effect before the beveling is a script i modified called 'airbrush and ink'.

for the other, i masked the eyes so as not to alter them and applied some of the steps of that same script, but did it manually and altered a few things from it.

it's ok, steve. we got it

LQQKER,

VERY nice! love the colors and background!

Hi Danny,

I duplicated the Layer and applied the Extrude Filter as well as a colour Adjustment Layer for each to add some colour.

Hope you like it.

Regards

Con

con,

ok, that's a new look. interesting how the mosaic on the right of her head seems to bubble up and curve to fit the contours of her head. and then, as it wraps under her chin it once again contours, only this time away from us to flatten out on the left. very interesting use of light and dark.

No filters, just a lot of dodging, burning and a white overlay.
