Beautiful child, excellent soft lighting! I attempted no sketch, oil or watercolor; I only tried to improve the smile. It's not always easy to smile on command for a photograph.

cleaned, sharpened, adjusted color, balance, and contrast, and changed the shirt color. just a tiny bit of cloning around the edges of the face.

One more pencil. White layer and painting with hide all (black) mask and an impressionist texture.

Pencil tutorial

Legacy-Art, I did give this tute before, but I don't remember the thread. Here it is again:

1. Convert image to b&w.
2. Dupe background layer and set mode to Screen.
3. Adjust opacity.
4. Open new layer and fill with white.
5.Add a “hide all mask” (black) and paint with white brush.
(Use high opacity to outline figure and remove unnecessary elements, and use low opacity to brush in on face and hair. A black brush, of course, corrects any mistakes.)
6.If necessary repeat steps 4 and 5 to fine-tune image.

I did add a paper texture with Impressionist, but that's not necessary. Have fun.

...and I meant to mention how much Nathaniel's mother likes this one, Christine. I like it a lot, too, so much so that you inspired me to take a crack at this one.

It was nice to see you pop in.

BTW: Thanks for the referral to the nice folks at Focal Press.

lqqker,

i like that. i think that's the best in the lot so far. i'd take it over mine. good color, good texure, good background, good contrast...really nicely done!

dbuckle,
i like yours too. good blending of the shirt to match the face. nice soft look without distorting the base picture!

I would think this handsome young man's mom would be overjoyed at the beautiful paintings everyone has done. Really creative and varied.
Here's my attempt, using Painter IX.

Really nice work here! Tried something a little different for me.
Duped background/Screen/Add MT layer filled with white/Reveal All/Loosely painted in background.

Impressionist: Fingerpaint/Image/25,100,158

Flattened, duped and flipped horizontal. Reduced opacity to 30%.

Adjusted contrast in LAB.

Cheers

Dave

Yeah, I noticed that, Craig, but looking at the original, it didn't seem to be enough difference to re-do.

Sketching Nathaniel

Hi Serissa and welcome. That's a rare result!

This is my first serious effort to try a sketch in Painter and glad I went through the exercise even though it took almost 4 hours. The first image is the result of using PowerRetouche B/W Studio Plugin and then cloning from that in Painter.

It's not so easy, is it, to maintain the correct shape/contours? In PSProX there was a lot of fine dodging and burning, also minimal amounts of Smudging with a chalk brush.

Hmmm, Craig and Legacy Art, I layered the painting over the original and erased down to the lips, expecting to find a color difference, but I flattened the layers, and the lips became the same shade once more. It's not a matter of my having colored them. Sometimes colors play tricks on our eyes.
Here's the erased version. I can't tell much difference.
