Absolutley great variations on this beautiful picture!
Here's my version. Cropped, used Nik Color effex Skylight filter, then Dreamy Pix and added matt.

Thanks Craig,
I can see what you mean, has those same brown, beige tones...good idea.

Question for Alcar..

Quote:
My interpretation is a pencil portrait that essentially uses painting with white.
Alcar - could you expand on the painting with white technique - love the effect.

MargaretM, here's how I do my pencil portraits. 1. Desaturate the photo. 2. Add a Curves Adjustment Layer and move the beginning of the curve (on the bottom left) straight up until you see the blacks change to gray. 3. Merge Visible and duplicate. 4. Change the foreground color to white and begin "painting" using a soft brush. Start with brush 100% opacity to outline the figure, then cut back to a very low opacity and paint over the whole image. You'll want to keep good detail in the critical areas, such as eyes, nose, mouth, etc. The key to all this brushing is maintaining a good tonal balance. When you are finished, add a Levels Adjustment Layer and move the slider on the left in a short ways just to perk the image up a little. If you have any problems, let me know.

This is a lovely photo to work from!
Danny, I like the way your pencil strokes work,
Alcar, your version inspired me to try something similar, it's really lovely! but it just seems I have trouble not adding color to anything.

-vignetted, saved as a new photoshop file A.
-made a line drawing from the vingnette, saved as file B
-cloned in Painter from both A and B with watercolor brushes and saved as file C
-converted file C to greyscale and made a duotone with a rusty color and white, pasted this back over file C. Set the opacity to about 45% to tone down the color. (really just wanted a tone to it)

Like, Danny said right at the start, this photo is perfect for sketching.
Had another shot at sketching with Painter - liked this one better.
