Re: Alexandra....

pavel, i like the first one better. there's something about blurring those eyes in the 2nd one that i'm not real crazy about

alex, now that's a pencil sketch. (the first one) i really like that one. the grain is just a bit too perfect to truly fool one into thinking it's a true pencil, but the overall effect is... wow! the 2nd is excellent also but i'm so drawn to the first that i'm afraid i've run out of superlatives to give to the 2nd

Re: Alexandra....

I normally don't do smudge painting. With ten kids still at home I don't have the time. AND I don't do it very well. I guess lack of practice. But here's my try. I ran it through impressionist first, then psp9 smudge brush. If I had more time it would be better...someday

Craig...Thank you for comments. The second one was a generic approach - mess up a picture (that part worked fine) and then bring back some of the features (did not work that well)

A last one, that's it for today... an attempt to imitate an old painting.

Re: Alexandra....

I have to add my two cents and my two pictures in here, very nice work folks. On the first I used Impressionist Chalk Sketch:On Heavy Laid Paper and on the second I used Photoshops :Poster Edges,Colored Pencil,Cut Out and Solarize filters with varied blend modes and opacities.

Re: Alexandra....

First, I have to apologize to Craig for not answering his question on the last submission. I used Impressionist with a few mods including the way I do the orientation map. Still experimenting; haven't figured out how to control the orientation to get a circular mosaic effect, but hopfully I will. I've also, since this submission, found out that I can use a file for the background color (i.e., I can use a textured grain as opposed to solid color; really helps).

Anyway, this one is a little more of a traditional water color illustration on textured canvas. All done in GIMP. Attached is a low quality crop. Here's the complete rendering.

Thanks Patricia; just to note, the full WC version is not cropped; only cropped the attached (and, unfortunately lowered the quality too) to get it to DPR's spec. I did pick the crop per Venusean 4 corners method in mind though (but didn't quite get there).

Re: Alexandra....

Thanks Patricia. Regarding my new picture I would normally stay away from such a bold rough texture for a portrait of a woman but I think this one works.

Patricia, thank you.
I wouldn't say I'm anythere close to "coming to grips" with Painter.
Like you picture, the painted look. Background is great. Tried to get something similar with standard brushes with little success.

JimJam, your last picture is astonishing.

Re: Alexandra....

This is a beautiful portrait of a beautiful young woman. It led to thoughts of the masters and the way they treated portraiture. I'm not, nor will I ever profess to be, masterful in the painting area. However, I couldn't resist a go at the cracked paint, dark, dramatically lit, style called chiaroscuro that they so successfully used.

Thank you for sharing this modern Mona Lisa.

Janet,

Very nice picture.

As a small comment, I do not think that on the old portraits one could see any canvas. They would normally use many paint layers and then varnish to completely cover canvas.

A techinical question - how did you make the cracked paint.

Pavel
