Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

This pose makes one wonder what she's thinking...

Then again maybe we don't want to know.

Hi-res source: http://www.sxc.hu/browse.phtml?f=download&id=780511

==========

My interpretation:
* lighten eyes a bit: Apply Levels adjustment layer, close it, Ctrl + I (to invert). Airbrush white on mask around eyes to reveal Levels effect.
* Flatten
* Duplicate Background
* Impressionist > Charcoal > Default
* Duplicate Background again and drag duplicate to top of layer stack
* Impressionist > Charcoal > Default (brush size = 25%)
* Add "hide all" Layer Mask
* Airbrush white on the Layer Mask using Chalk 36 brush around eyes and mouth to restore details in these areas
* Select > All
* Edit > Copy merged
* Create new layer
* Edit > Paste
* Duplicate Background again and drag duplicate to top of layer stack
* Add "hide all" Layer Mask
* Airbrush (very low opacity) white on the Layer Mask to restore details where needed
* Select > All
* Edit > Copy merged
* Create new layer
* Edit > Paste
* Apply texture of choice

A Mondriaan interpretation.

First I have to say bravo Kiska. I really like the way the fill idea worked here. Since I'm lazy, decided to use just filters today. DCSpecial's ICE4 and GIMP Dilate filter for this compilation. Here's the complete rendering (a little over 1MByte; attached is a cropped and compressed version).

Re: Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

Wow, some terrific renditions here! Kiska, especially like your SA version. Danny, great Impressionist work. Pavel, nice texture.

For my version, began with Snap Art Oil (different settings for face). Followed with many layers, playing with different blending modes. Did some freehand brush work on the eyes and face and finished with a 50% gray overlay to adjust highlights and shadows.

way too many steps to list. in general, some dodge and burn, airbrush, push, blends, brightness/contrast and a kitchen sink.

Mondriaan revisited.

Learned a lot of tricks since I last did this and wanted to better respect Mondriaan.

Pretty neat Lyle. Mine is the kitchen sink effect, lost track but used lots of things.

Lyle, can I inspire you to do more?? I never cease to be amazed by what you come up with. :-)

I went with a high-key something-or-other.

Re: Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

Except for the hair color, she looks like Claire from LOST...

And Danny, Studio Artist *is* now available for Windows ;-):

"Studio Artist 4 is the next generation of Studio Artist digital art, image and video processing software. With version 4 we’ve now opened up the Studio Artist experience to Windows as well as Mac users. Mac users will be pleased that version 4 is a universal binary application with faster native processing speed on both Intel and PPC Macs. Windows users will be pleased that they can now run Studio Artist on their Windows computers. Studio Artist 4 is compatible with Apple computers running OSX 10.4 through the latest OSX 10.6, and with Windows computers running Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and Windows 7."

Excellent. Look forward to taking it for a test spin.

It appears at the moment there is no PC demo link at their site, but there's means for PC users to contact them if interested.

Just think: Studio Artist 4.0 (PC) and new spiffy looking painting capabilities in PS CS 5. It's going to be a fun next few months!

Thanks for the heads up.

Re: Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

Has anybody developed a filter forge that can make bricks (i.e. Legos) from an image Craig? Just curious.

Re: Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

yup, a couple, in fact. http://www.filterforge.com/filters/s...tml?q=lego&h=r

the variety of filters, especially now that FF2 (beta still) filters are being accepted into the library, is quite astounding! start here and you can see what i mean: http://www.filterforge.com/filters/ and here's a page that might be more appropriate for photo artists: http://www.filterforge.com/filters/c...y44-page1.html

Re: Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

Cool; redcap is the one that I like. Wonder when they will take ver. 2 out of beta and also how much that would cost? Anyway, thanks for the info Craig.

Re: Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

cool

well, ver. 2 beta still has at least one stage left to test and that stage hasnt been shown yet, so there's still some time to play i think the first time buy price is the same as the current price... i think. but there are some significant discounts to doing upgrades from ver 1 to 2 and so on. i dont pay much attention to pricing any more. i have two copies both with free lifetime updates. i have one copy on my xp machine and one on my win7 machine and beta 2 on both. so, i actually have four instances of filter forge on my machines

have you ever tried out the demo(s), lyle?

Re: Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

Not yet Craig. Not keen on Beta software (burnt in the past), and don't want to install trial software either. Even when I installed DAP originally, I did purchase it the same day since I already knew that I would. I don't purchase things too often since I'm having to be very conservative with my dough right now. Anyway, still amazed at what you've done with filterforge.

Re: Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

Got rid of the shadow over her eyes.
Played around with dry brush and cutout filters.
Added a faint pink gradient.

Re: Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

Thought I would try smudge stick this time (Impressionist default setting that I modded using original for background). Of course I heavily pre-processed prior to the Impressionist step, and also post-processed using Bumpmap effects and such.

Like the textured ivory look of the cameos Craig. Assuming it was done if Filter Forge.

Re: Creative Portraits: Redhead with an Attitude

Sorry; couldn't help myself. lol

I did add displacement mapping which helped remove the regularity of the maze rendering technique (which helps the subject come through better). Click link below for bigger version.
