| Is use Photoshop CS2. Herewith my terrible (terrible!!!!) first attempt at cel shading. I would nevertheless like to experiment with putting a half tone pattern on top - the sort of thing I have seen in comic illustration effects. When I try and add a halftone pattern though, I lose all the colour/cel shading. It just all turns a sort of sepia monotone. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. This is the sort of effect I am after.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/codyr/328643328/ Last edited by Canna W; 02-07-2009 at 02:19 AM. Reason: Add ref to effect I was after. |

| Re: Query re half tone on on top of cel shading Hi, Canna! Welcome to RetouchPro! Explore and Enjoy! For a halftone screen effect, here's how I do it. 1. First enlarge your graphic by 200% (Image>Size etc.) 2. Duplicate and desaturate a copy of the Background and run your half tone filter on this layer 3. Set the layer for luminosity 4 Duplicate that layer and set for Color Burn 5. Adjust the opacity of the two B/W layers. I've got the Lum layer at about 60% and the Color Burn at about 30%. 6. Go back and resize your image 50%. (This will take it back to it's original size) Hope this helps. |

| Re: Query re half tone on on top of cel shading Swampy -------- That was fantastic! Totally magic, and I love doing photoshop when it's like that :-) I followed your instructions, but fiddled slightly differently with the levels of opacity etc. I increased the saturation on the bottom layer. Had the luminosity layer at 57% Had the colour burn layer at 100%. Thank you again - your advice was incredibly helpful! Hue ---- Amazing tutorial, which I will certainly try, but thank you also for introducing me to a fantastic site! I have seen their TV progs before, but never knew you could switch on to individual tutorials. Wonderful! Craig ----- Many thanks for that. I will go and check out Filter Forge. Thank you so much everyone for all your help! It is absolutely superb..... I don't seem able to upload at present, will upload my effort following Swampy's instructions later.... |

| Re: Query re half tone on on top of cel shading That is amazing Ikroll! Not sure if 'script' means filter or action, or how much you twiddled as well, but whatever way, it's brilliant! You have definitely waved a fairy wand over my poor starter image.... |

| Re: Query re half tone on on top of cel shading Let me know if you haven't gotten my PM Canna. Thanks Craig, but the brilliance goes to the one who created the Script-fu. |

| Re: Query re half tone on on top of cel shading Quote:
Questions... 1. Which halftone filter did you use and what settings? 2. What's the theory behind/benefit of the 200% image size prior to other steps? ------------------ Hue: Thanks for Corey Barker link. I liked that one a lot. Welcome to RP. ------------------ Send me an e-mail (click my name above) if you would like to test the Photoshop actions I wrote based on Swampy's and Corey's methods. |

| Re: Query re half tone on on top of cel shading Danny, I use Filter>Sketch>Halftone Pattern at 3-11 for the above sample. This also worked well at a setting of 2-7, but for compression and posting to the web I liked the "grosser" look. It's not absolutely necessary to do the 200% enlargement, but I find that I have more control doing it. The sliders in the halftone pattern have preset "stops" and are not "free flowing". I can use bigger dots in an enlarged version and of course they get reduced when sized back down. The resolution of the original file will also make a difference in the courseness/fineness of the dot patter. Experiment with this concept and decide for yourself. Also, the color burn layer is not really necessary, but it does provide more shading definition. |

| Re: Query re half tone on on top of cel shading Separate the black lines from the color. Correct the colors to be richer and more of a flatter tint, (less shading) Use regular old color halftone filter on the color layer. Set the black line layer to multiply. |
