I like this picture a lot and thought it would be a great candidate for a smudge...it turned out to be heavier than I thought...Had lots of trouble with all those different tones. Have a try, I am certain you will be much more successful than me...

Yep, that is quite rough. If I hadn't seen Palms version I would have thought that's the way to go with this pic....Anyhow I am glad that I'm not they only one having problems with the tones

Well vampires have made a lot of noise of late (yeah; I know it isn't Halloween), so thought I would do something slightly different then the norm.

Found it a challenge with the multi-temp lighting with crazy noise. Corrected with selective color. Smoothing done with NN, GB, and SB. After smoothing, did a lot of D&B and healing for the big spots.

Don’t normally post here, but always liked the photo art. I'll try to learn more and post an artsy one on a later thread...

Thanks for the welcome and kind comments. I have dipped into the PA section for a while now and have been impressed and inspired by many of the works. Some of them I just have to say how did they do that?!?!

I am planning on incorporating a combo of photo art and normal in some of my own works. I'll try an learn a little about how to make PA over spring break then post my results.

Greetings Yesterday I stumbled on your site and learned about smudging for the first time. I am totally new to the art world, and I am well aware that I still have a way to go before I even can see what I am looking at I was inspired to try this technique and here is my effort. My husband says it still looks too much like a photo. I had a lot of fun getting it to this point, and need lots more practice to look anything like some of these above! Thanks for all the helpful information, brushes, etc!

PS i have no idea how to insert the file so i attached it

Welcome to "the fun zone"! -- and congrats on your first smudge, which looks a WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN my first shot at the technique. You did fine on the attach. That's preferred method around here.

re: looks like a photo vs. looks like a painting
That can definitely be a challenge. Here's something to try...

Before starting the smudge work, seriously boost non-facial and non-hair colors in the image. "Bright, saturated colors" are not typically present throughout a photo.

Ditto for detail. Simplify (smooth out) unimportant areas (not completely, but some) prior to smudging. Photos have a lot of precise detail; paintings do not.

You have a bright future as a digital artist. Good luck on your next creation.
