Doug (or anybody who knows),

How do I control the order in which attachments show up in a post. They are not appearing in the same order that I upload them--it almost seems random to me. I've even tried alphabetizing them to no avail.

I dunno, I assumed it was order posted, but let's see.

Order posted is deliberately not the same as filedate or alphabetic in this case.

I know it doesn't help much but, although I've seen this problem reported before, it has never happened to me. Attachments have always shown up exactly in the order they were added.

Maybe it would be useful to see if we can isolate some factor.
Over my stay here I've used Windows 98, 2000, XP and both browsers IE and Firefox - so unless you're using a Mac, the problem doesn't seem to be there.

Bart, can you indicate some post of yours where the attachments got mixed up? (Or send some attachments to this thread.)
Maybe we'll spot something different.

I attached them in the order fig1,fig2,fig3,fig4,fig5 and saw them listed in that order. In this case, they came out almost reversed: fig5,fig4,fig2,fig3,fig1. There have been times when I see them come out correctly.

I'm using windows xp pro and firefox. Here are four I attached in alphabetical order--let's see how it turns out.

Doh! They came out 3,2,1,4.

I often open the "manage attachement" window more than once--maybe upload one image, then close it. Then reopen it and upload two more. Then reopen it again and remove an image and upload some others, etc... Is that a problem? I think I'll experiment in the test area using IE and other variables.

On the first pass of Manage Attachments, images are shown in upload sequence.

On subsequent passes, if one deletes an image and replaces it with another or adds another image, the original order gets whacked. It may at this point go to "last uploaded, first listed," but I cannot confirm off the top of my head.

Like Danny said, this is probably the reason.

I can't remember ever posting in anything but straight sequence without closing the "Manage Attachments", so that could explain why it never happened to me.

Good work, Bart, seems like you solved an old mystery.

I wish you were right, but the problem appears to be more complicated. I just got done doing a bunch of experiments. Here are the current observations:

-If I post with firefox and read the post with firefox, the images appear randomized.
-If I post with internet explorer, but read the post with firefox, the images appear in order.
-If I post with firefox, but read the post with internet explorer, the images appear in order.
-If I post with IE and read the post with IE, the images appear in order.

In other words, if internet explorer is involved in anyway (posting or reading or both), everything works fine. Next I'll see if there's some setting in firefox that could fix firefox.

Now I just discovered that if I view the thread in linear mode, things work. However, threaded and hybrid modes reverse things (Even Doug's post switches order for the two modes.) Even firefox is happy if I view in linear mode.

BTW, all of these behaviors are *in addition* to the issue regarding opening the manage attachment dialog more than once.

I wouldn't have thought the browser one was using or view option would have such varied results.
