Paid subscriptions

I've ditched the donation system and added a paid subscription option. Details are in the FAQ.

It's very beta, so I ask in advance to please be patient with any "quirks".

Re: Paid subscriptions

Tried it... seems to work fine.

Kinda miss the banner ads, though. Screen looks a little naked without them!

Re: Paid subscriptions

Oh dear, I didn't notice either, but then husband shaved off moustache and a week later asked "notice anything different?" and I said "You somehow look a little cleaner, did you have a shower", to which he barked "I shaved my moe off, a week ago", lol

Re: Paid subscriptions

So far no hitches, which is amazing by itself. Actually, the hardest part was figuring out how to get that little "Patron" label to show.

And the ironic part is that I can't hide the ads for myself

Re: Paid subscriptions

Using Firefox, I've never even seen the ads. I guess it's the pop-up blocker?

Re: Paid subscriptions

hmmm, I also use firefox. The ads were there but with the good site design they blended in to the point they were not intrusive...to me anyway.

Re: Paid subscriptions

I thought there'd be an immediate run to use the new gallery space, but evidently not.

I didn't get adds either CJ Do you use AdBlock Plus with FF, if so that might explain. I also recommend using Addblock Filter Set G Updater, to keep those pesky adds at bay on most sites.

Re: Paid subscriptions

I have a question regarding the disclaimer in the subscription purchase box...

Quote:
Validity periods marked * indicate that purchasing this subscription is recurring, this means after the period is complete it will automatically be renewed.
Automatically renewed? Recurring?

I read this to mean after 12 months, my Pay Pal/credit card, whatever, will be charged again for another subscription. If that is the case then that means that someone would be holding my credit card/PayPal information in order to "automatically" renew me. I don't want to sound paranoid, but the presence of this disclaimer and the way it is worded is a bit of a put off. It lead me to come here and ask before completing the subscription.

Re: Paid subscriptions

Recurring was an option, but I did not enable it. Notice the subscription has no "*" next to it.

Right ! no hitches, congratulations Doug. I am glad you managed to get "Patron" to show. I feel very virtuous on seeing it
Maybe you should subscribe through PayPal too so as not to have the adds ? :P

Re: Paid subscriptions

Another irony, it won't allow me to join because the email addresses are the same (you can't send money to yourself). Of course, I could just cheat and flick some switches behind the scenes, but that would be...cheating

Re: Paid subscriptions

ha ha ha Really funny, what if someone "donates" a subscription for you ? I wouldn't mind and don't think it would be unethical or something like that or would it ? Also don't worry the fee would be almost inexistent he he he ...
But I am serious about that possibility in your case at least.

Re: Paid subscriptions

That's really nice of you, but it's not that hiding the ads is impossible for me, it's that I have to be able to see the ads (they require maintenance, etc.).

Re: Paid subscriptions

Hi Doug,

Could you tell me how much gallery space I would get if I had a patron subscription ?

Thanks, Alison.

Re: Paid subscriptions

Currently it's 50MB. But don't subscribe for the gallery space, that's just a thank you for subscribing. There are lots of larger galleries out there for less (or free).

Re: Paid subscriptions

i actually dont mind the ads. in fact, i've found them useful at times. the only place where it is annoying is in the gallery where the ads block the display of larger images. but, from another discussion, that seems to be an I.E. thing. and, the only other thing i dont like is that some of the ads come with an activex request, which i do find very annoying. i have RP set to allow activex controls but otherwise not from other sites and since these ads are direct links, those activex control requests do show up. so, every time an ad with one of these comes up in the queue, i have to click off the request and then click off the microsoft notice of request blocked.
