Download from thumbnail, full size not available

Hi all, hope this is the correct forum for this question... If I try to download an image from a thumbnail attachment (no larger file link available), all I get is a thumbnail size jpg file. Even if I click the thumbnail to open up the zoomed larger version and download, still same result. What surprises me about it is that I don't think that is the case with all user's systems since I don't think most of the gurus here work on small thumbnail size files usually. I'm on a dell pc with xp pro operating system. Anyone else on the same able to get normal size downloads with this method or is my result expected?
Thanks,
Doreen

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

Perhaps your popup blocker is stopping the new window that opens to view the attachment?

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

Thanks for the reply Doug. I double checked and my pop up blocker is disabled. :-( Well guess I'll keep investigating. At least the major challenges usually have links to the full size photos.

Try right-clicking on the thumbnail and select "save target as"

Click on the link in this thread. Does a window pop up showing a very large crossword puzzle, much larger than the thumbnail?

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

I think this one is working as expected...Clicking on your link, I get a new window with two posts in it, both from you. First post displays an attached thumbnail of the crossword puzzle. Clicking on that thumbnail opens another window with a larger version of the puzzle. Right click on that image to "save picture as" and photoshopxwords.gif saves. The file is 93 kb. If I click the link in the 2nd post where it says I put a copy here.... a new window pops up showing your gallary and a picture of the puzzle with size information below it. Right click and "save picture as" from that page saves a 32k gif file but on that page it also says to click on the image to view larger image. Clicking that image does open to a larger image and a right click 'save picture as' from that image also saves a 93 kb gif file. Based on the sizes listed, it seems that is working as expected.

What really got me wondering about all this was a few weeks ago I was trying to download Swampy's Italian Alley picture. All I could get was a thumbnail size file. I pm'd her to see if I should be getting a bigger file since I had wanted to try some painting with light on it and others seemed to be working with the image and posting thumbnails larger than her original thumbnail. She said when she downloads from that same thumbnail in her post she gets a 9 x 12, 1.55mb file which I could never get regardless of the method I used to try to save it. That is the most recent download that I tried to get but couldn't. I don't have trouble when people post links to their files, which is good.

I don't want you to waste a lot of your time on it, I know you're busy. I think I'll give her same file a try from work which is also xp just to see if I get consistent results. Thanks for your test, it made me feel I should keep trying with other posts and maybe I'll find that some are successful.

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

doreen, are you using dial-up or broadband? and swampy's post you mentioned, what site is it posted on? some places like imageshack can sometimes take a while before the image actually shows up. it depends on their servers and your throughput to that site and your internet speed. there's also a small chance a site may be down for maintenance or experiencing an overload at any given moment. different sites also have different bandwidths and this can affect how long it takes to connect to it or see a given page or image.

post the link in question and i'll see what i get.

Craig... My "Italian Alley" is here

Might this have something to do with a PC virus protection filter that wouldn't allow downloads of JPEGS over XXX Kbytes? Just a stab in the dark.

thanks, dee dee. not sure what doreen is referring to about the 1.5 meg image, unless it's your photobucket gallery and those work just fine for me.

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

Doreen and I exchanged PM's and I downloaded the original posting of the Italian Alley image and told her the size (1.5 meg at a size of 9x12). She can't get that size to download even though she can click on the thumbnail and get the larger verision.

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

oh, that's odd. normally, if you can see it then you can right click it to 'save image as'.

ok, went to your gallery site, dee dee, and found the italian alley pic. i clicked on the thumb, it opened up, clicked on it again to get the full size and then right clicked on it to 'save image as' and it works just fine for me. so, yes, does sound like some sort of blocking going on there for doreen. it could be in her browser as a blocker or even something in her 'options' folder.

doreen, do you allow cookies on swampy's photobucket site? and what about activex controls? could just be a security setting in your browser options. and what browser and version of that browser are you using?

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

Craig, the problem wasn't in downloading the image from my gallery, it was from trying to download it from the RTP thread.

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

hi all, thanks for your thoughts. I'm using IE version 6x. My cookies are set to prompt before allowing a save. I have had some activeX issues from a virus attact a couple years ago. I fixed the issue to about 95% I'd guess. I do sometimes still have issues where activeX is used but I figure I'll have a new hard drive or computer before I bother with troubleshooting that any more. :-) I was mostly curious to see if other PC users w/XP pro were having success with it. I'm thinking there is a block somewhere on my end at this point.

Hi Gary,
ok, dean is gone and life has returned to normal. monster of a hurricane, luckily it stayed south of us.
i followed your steps but I'm afraid the results of the download were the same. sorry, I know writing out such detailed info took some time. I sure appreciate your taking the time to post your test for me, thanks again!

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

OK, just one more set of settings I can think of in IE that might conceivably cause your problem.
  • Click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
  • Scroll down to the Multimedia section and ensure your settings are as in the attached picture.
  • Click OK.
  • Re-Start Internet Explorer.

If Enable Image Toolbar is unchecked on your computer, you'll have to reboot your computer after you've checked it and exited out of Internet Options.

OOPS , just realised you won't be able to see the settings in the picture (what was I thinking).

Just check everything in the Multimedia section except Show Image download placeholders.

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

Hi Gary, I'm afraid that my multimedia settings were already set as you requsted. Could it be my expectations are wrong? When I PM'd Swampy she said the download should result in a file over a Meg. My download results in 75KB which, if my math is correct, is not what I expected based on her reply. I don't know the backend of retouch, but if all she uploaded was that size file does it make sense that that I'd get something larger on a download. Anyway, I do feel bad that you are using so much time trying to help so maybe just one more question/test.... Do you have a PC or Mac? If you have a PC, would you download her Italian Alley picture from her posted thumbnail and let me know what you get? My download from links work fine and a test post that Doug sent me worked fine.
Thanks again.

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

Swampy's picture links at RetouchPro.

http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/att...4&d=1184602492
http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/att...5&d=1184602502

Give me images which are

850x638 pix and 74.27KB
850x661 pix and 83.42KB

Which is in accord with the 100KB limit for pictures posted in that forum.

For her image at Photobucket.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...nAlleycopy.jpg

I got 850x661 pix and 180.05KB

Didn't find any 1MB+ files anywhere.

Did Swampy provide you with a link?

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

ok so you're getting the same as me. makes me feel better. no she didn't give me any link. i was just asking her for a larger file (via a pm) to play with and she said she just saved the file from RetouchPRO and gets a 9 x 12, 1.55mb file when opened in Photoshop. i guess the other posters were just working from the thumbnail download also, which i found strange since I thought they'd want a larger picture to play with. she is on a mac however and so i was just trying to get confirmation that retouch didn't have a larger version of the file saved somewhere in a library that some systems (like mac) were able to get to or maybe confirmation that somewhere my connection was just blocking a larger download when other systems were not. well, I do appreciate all your efforts but I think it's time to rest on this one. again, thanks a ton for your time!

Re: Download from thumbnail, full size not available

You're welcome. Always happy to help if I can.

All images on RetouchPro, except for the Challenges (They're 200KB) are restricted to below 100KB (200KB if you're a Patron) for site bandwidth reasons.

Anyone wanting to post a larger image has to post a link (usually to an image hosting site).
